Week 107 - What was your childhood kitchen like?
Comments (19)My parents built our house as a passive solar house in the late 50s in a softened Bauhaus style in Switzerland. Large rooms with large double pane windows and heavy duty wooden sliding doors to the backyard. From my bedroom, I could see over lake Zug towards the Rigi and Pilatus mountains and the Alps proper beyond. Ahh, I do miss my home and those views... The kitchen was bright due to large windows toward East. It was a fitted galley with red painted plywood sliding doors on the slanted uppers, and another row of white painted cabs above those. All the bas cabs were white. We had a stainless steel counter with an integrated huge triple sink, with the small middle sink housing a removable colander. We used the pullout faucet to wash down the whole counter, including the glossy black tile backsplash. We also had a large "American" fridge, which was needed, as I'm one of 7 kids. A red laminate counter with a metal edge covered the cabinet run on the other side. All cabs on that side had had drawers. There was a pullout cab that housed oils and vinegars too. and in the center of that counter was the prep area. It had a drawer that stored the kitchen utensils and below that was a pull-out cutting board, underneath that sat a kitchen stool. It actually was very ergonomic, with the large cutting board at the right height for peeling veggies and slicing and dicing. No uppers on that side of the kitchen, instead there was a huge interior window towards a butler's pantry/cleaning/storage room. I liked helping to cook, but didn't like the clean-up, haha, I still don't. I especially hated to have to buff the dark grey linoleum floor. The polishing had to be done with a loud buffing machine that looked like an upright vacuum, but instead had two large circulating wool pads that polished the floor until it looked shiny for a day or two... Here an approximate drawing of the kitchen: The cabs were slanted with integrated wood handles, similar to the cabinets in the photo below, which I found by googling slanted kitchen cabs. I don't think, that I have ever seen such cabs anywhere else. I do like them, they're not so much in your face. I still do love the Bauhaus and MCM houses. Jeez, I live in a house that has a lot in common with my childhood home: Passive solar too. Lots of large windows (shaded in Summer) towards the south and the backyard. Plus I'm planning on white cabinets with a dark grey/black backsplash for our upcoming kitchen remodel. Ha, maybe I'll check out red laminate choices versus the butcher block for the island? I wish I could do the stainless steel counters on the perimeter, but I think they're just too much $$$....See MoreWhat’s a cool thing or appliance from your childhood home?
Comments (49)A laundry chute and a built into the wall telephone shelf, with a shelf underneath for the fat phone book. We loved to play hide and seek and go down the laundry chute to the basement. Now that would be considered too dangerous. All us cousins had houses with laundry chutes, our aunt with no kids would never let us go down hers. We couldn't understand why...........See MoreWhat are your most memorable music concerts?
Comments (43)Ooh just reminded me in the mid seventies ( my best guess- 74-76) I saw Patti Smith in some very very small venue which might have been a basement of someplace. She spoke quite a bit and I can recall she said that Baudelaire was the first Rastafarian. It was all over my head, but I knew I was witnessing someone very special. I also remember seeing Bette Midler at the Copacabana maybe a year after I saw Patti Smith. I was absolutely astounded at her energy. She really put on an amazing show and the venue was really small enough to have real banter going on with the audience. She was so sharp and quick- kind of how she comes across but it was so authentic....See MoreYour most memorable Christmas
Comments (8)Lovely story Marilyn. YOU once said you liked animals more than people....your not alone. ♥ Christmas in Cozumel. Christmas Eve, we went on a night dive around 8pm, got out of the water around 9pm. Fireworks were going off! We sat on the pier watching. Then....wandered into town. We were staying at the Sol Caribe Hotel, next to the beach. The center of the hotel is a glass elevator. The swim up bar had live iguanas. Link My 1st time seeing the underwater Christ statue. He had starfish at his feet. Link There's a sunken plane used in an 007 movie, that the ocean has taken over, about 60' off the beach. Coral tubes you dive into and out of, a maze filled with tiny fish. A wall, my 1st abise, for me, a new diver at the time We'd seen a very expensive ladies perfume for sale @ the drugstore....out front on a table for $6! I Assumed it was a knock off. The next day a fellow diver exclaimed she'd found her favorite perfume for pennies on the dollar.....ooops.....that was the real thang...? Yep! Then I found opera length pearls, 30", for $10 a strand. I purchased 3! Both our mothers were given a strand and one for ME. I took them to several jewelry stores that said they looked real, felt grainy on the tooth, weighted like pearls...but would charge $60 to x-ray them before they could issue an appraisal. I passed. My mothers name was Pearl....it was a dream of hers to own a strand such as these. (I didn't know that when I purchased them) . I presented them in a satin lined, sueded pearl pouch, that folded up. She was THRILLED! To the moon!. Later that night we ate dinner at midnight. We had a seafood platter we shared. My first octopus. Like rubber....:0) It was a very memorable trip....See More- 3 years agolast modified: 3 years ago
