Ideas on updating a 1951 ranch
Comments (26)HOUSE: The brick is great! The roof is a pleasant neutral, and you say it's in good condition. What is strange is the way the windows are snugged against the gable, which is accentuated by the shutters. And the huge, glaring gable of course. Removing shutters and painting gable and other woodwork in something muted that blends with the roof and brick - maybe a grey-green or grey-blue? LANDSCAPE: It's got a nice lawn, but some planting around the house to emphasize the entry and the walk, and break up the expanse of brick on the right would be nice. You have a perfect spot for some small flowering trees and perennials between the walk and the house. RE: the GIMP ... originally was the General Image Manipulation Program, but its long name was changed to the "Gnu Image Manipulation Program" when GNU (http://www.gnu.org/ ) took over the development. The use of "gimpy" to mean "walks with a limp" is US slang dating from the 1920s. Do you also think cartographers should give up the use of "plot" because it's crude and insulting French slang, have all machinists and Irish dancers stop using "jigs", etc.?...See MoreSTUCK on layout/updating ideas for my hillside ranch!!
Comments (35)With the smaller tread of 9 1/2 " , I got them to fit straight. The riser works out to 7 3/8". This will be MUCH better than what I have now (which is 9" treads, 9.5" average riser), BUT, I'm wondering if it will be comfortable? With the 45deg bend, I can have 10" treads AND have a little more room at the bottom of the stairs. Im not sure how important that extra 1/2" is... I am preferring the idea of only having to build a simple straight stair! I fiddled with the kitchen as well, I moved the wall, made the mudroom basically a foot more narrow, put in cabinets, got the Island bigger. However, I didnt care for it as much - the space ended up looking a little lop-sided. I like how as it is, the kitchen entry points on either side of the island basically line up with the two big windows in the living room (which can't be moved since I JUST put them in), and I think that adds a sense of proportion and order to the whole room. I dont know if that is actually important, but I like it. I am perfectly fine with having a 5 foot island with 3 barstool type seats at it. In fact, the kitchen size/shape is my FAVORITE part of this plan, and I do pretty much owe that to you renovator 8 - Thanks! Updated Plan:...See MoreLooking to update my 70s ranch exterior ideas?
Comments (1)Take the shutters off, your windows are not designed for shutters. Paint the front door a bright color, unless that is a natural wood finish, then leave it. Remove wreath. Get a couple of large planters and fill with bright annuals in one, maximum two colors of your choosing and put them on each side of the entry walk. The siding could stand to be a creamier color, the existing color looks a bit pinkish and the stone looks a bit gold-ish. Need closeups....See MoreHow to update a 60s Ranch Exterior
Comments (11)Where does each front door lead? To me, it looks like the door in the middle was the original front door and it would lead to living area. The door to the left looks like it leads to a utility area. Have you changed the interior uses? Agree with housegal that the landscaping needs to be trimmed way back, it is serving as a barrier now rather than an open landscape plan to bring people to the front of your home. The high contrast white trim on the doors against the red siding draws all the focus. Changing exterior doors needs to relate to the interior floorplan. Where do you want people to come inside? Most don't want to have the utilities areas front and center; however, the owners inadvertently lead people right to the utility areas by highlighting that entrance (such as garage doors and side doors). Right now, your utility doors are bright white against a dark red siding. You can change that by blending your garage door color with the siding or having it darker than the siding so it doesn't stand out to accentuate your garage door. Same with your utility door. Color works wonders. You can use an accent color for your intended front door. And landscaping that works with your home....See MoreNatalie Barnum
