Hi! I'm exploring window treatments for our master bedroom. The vibe I am going for is serene, understated, spa-like. We currently have white top down/bottom up shades that filter light and provide privacy. I am considering custom-made exterior-mount Roman Shades in a bleached natural linen for the three large windows that face our yard (southern exposure). I want a neat and tailored look and I want to keep as much of the window pane exposed as possible because I love doing top down shades and having a "big sky" view out the window. I've never done Roman Shades before -- do you think this will work and how do you think it will look? If do Roman Shades on those three windows, I would likely then do wall-length drapery panels in the same bleached linen behind the headboard in order to handle those little windows up high, create a little softness around the bed area, and tie the different window coverings together. If anyone has the capacity mock any of this up, I would be most appreciative. I can see it in my mind, but have no idea how it will look in real life and since I'd be doing custom-made, I only get one chance at it. Thank you in advance for any assistance or advice you can offer.

I would do Horizon natural woven wood shades ( roman ) mounted a few inches above all the windows, and then add the natural linen panels on the the triple window. The unity comes from the woven : ) These can be cordless , btw

Not loving the idea of a wall of fabric behind the bed,,,,,huge expense for a whole lot of dust catcher.

Thanks, Jan! I appreciate your taking the time to help me. Your ideas are interesting and I'm definitely going to explore the Horizon shades.

I hate the look of the little windows up above the headboard because they feel basement-y to me. I have hangups about this because our previous home had windows like this too (in the living room) and they definitely felt basement-y to me there as well. :)

With the drapery behind the bed, I thought I could sort of mask the small windows but still access them when we want the light and/or fresh air they offer. I love our headboard, but it has a very heavy feel and I thought some airy linen drapes would balance that out with a little softness. Another source to look is jcp.com. I noticed they have 3 blackout drapes (one in regular home WT section and 2 in clearance) in the longer length at low prices--if the colors work for you (always the challenge). If you can't find the grommet style that might be easier to pull open/shut on a daily basis, you might consider ring clips since they slide easily. If the hem looks too challenging to alter on rod pocket styles, you can cut off the top and rehem that quite easily. IMHO they'll look best if you have them full length, rather than end at the window sill. It seems like that would really detract from the effect of the window. Even your inspiration pic, while really cute, seems to just miss the mark a bit on the curtains. They're ok I guess, but full-length would have been better--IMHO. You may have to get extra panels to give the fullness you want across the window when they're closed unless you go with custom widths. Good luck with your project! Hey There: "in" is what you like, so if you want plantation shutters go for it. However, I don't think they will work in your place and they will be not very functional. First things first: motorize your blinds for child safety reasons - motorization is very affordable and convenient. Roller shades will work great in your situation as an inside mount. Another option are bottom up top down pleated or honeycomb blinds - we offer them without any strings running across your glass - over 700 fabrics will give you the design and function you need and want...no compromise needed.

Ok, if you want a Roman Shade I would just do one to cover the whole bank of windows. One for the 3 window and one for the 2 window. How tall are your ceilings? Many people will mount the Roman shades higher than the window casings and allow the bottom of the Roman shade to cover just a small portion of the window, allowing for more light. You could do a wooden blind underneath for privacy and light control. In this case the Roman shade does not have to be operational but stationary and the blinds underneath will be what you use for privacy and light control. Bamboo blinds under a Roman shade are also a nice option.

Roller shades or Roman shades that raise and lower would be odd and impractical in front of doors. If you have them lowered even a tad the door is blocked. The logical solution is no shades but drapes for doors and windows and hung on the horizontal beam across all windows and doors in the room. Make the rods wide so they can open without blocking any glass.

For the small windows, remember that you can always hang any window treatments right at the ceiling line and have them stop at the top frame of the window if you want to hide the windows' "square" appearance and create the illusion of length.
