Hi! I'm exploring window treatments for our master bedroom. The vibe I am going for is serene, understated, spa-like. We currently have white top down/bottom up shades that filter light and provide privacy. I am considering custom-made exterior-mount Roman Shades in a bleached natural linen for the three large windows that face our yard (southern exposure). I want a neat and tailored look and I want to keep as much of the window pane exposed as possible because I love doing top down shades and having a "big sky" view out the window. I've never done Roman Shades before -- do you think this will work and how do you think it will look? If do Roman Shades on those three windows, I would likely then do wall-length drapery panels in the same bleached linen behind the headboard in order to handle those little windows up high, create a little softness around the bed area, and tie the different window coverings together. If anyone has the capacity mock any of this up, I would be most appreciative. I can see it in my mind, but have no idea how it will look in real life and since I'd be doing custom-made, I only get one chance at it. Thank you in advance for any assistance or advice you can offer.

I would do Horizon natural woven wood shades ( roman ) mounted a few inches above all the windows, and then add the natural linen panels on the the triple window. The unity comes from the woven : ) These can be cordless , btw

Not loving the idea of a wall of fabric behind the bed,,,,,huge expense for a whole lot of dust catcher.

Thanks, Jan! I appreciate your taking the time to help me. Your ideas are interesting and I'm definitely going to explore the Horizon shades.

I hate the look of the little windows up above the headboard because they feel basement-y to me. I have hangups about this because our previous home had windows like this too (in the living room) and they definitely felt basement-y to me there as well. :)

With the drapery behind the bed, I thought I could sort of mask the small windows but still access them when we want the light and/or fresh air they offer. I love our headboard, but it has a very heavy feel and I thought some airy linen drapes would balance that out with a little softness. I think it's really just a matter of personal preference. For example, in my home office, I have a window that abutts a corner, much like the one that segbrown has pictured in his first photo he attached. And another window 24" away from that first window. Both windows are located behind a desk with a rolling chair. I created cornices for the windows, and b/c both windows already have wooden blinds on them I bought a pre-fab panel that I plan on cutting in half and using both of the halves on the outer sides of both windows. Functionally, having two panels on BOTH sides of EACH window would not work for me, as the drapes are likely to be caught in the wheels of the rolling chair. So, I just improvised- especially since the panels are going to be faux anyways. Again, its a matter of personal preference. What do YOU want? You're the one that's going to have to live there :)

For the sliders, I'd look into a remote controlled roll down shade mounted outside above the doors. You can get them in different degrees of opaqueness, to control the light, but they will not give full privacy at night unless you get opaque, which won't work in the daytime unless you want black out. Most people have some kinds of lights outside their doors, so if it's lit outside there is no 'black hole' effect for uncovered windows. On the corner windows, I'd want bottom up shades so they could be partially covering the bottom part of the windows for privacy (the only part anyone could see in), yet you can still see out over the top and get the light. They also make vertical cellular shades that stack to the side and pretty much disappear. Outdoor mounted roller shade:

I love the dressers where they are! But to your question: Dark wood slat blinds would be classic but if you want curtains, your room is so traditional there's nothing wrong with having one very wide panel that hangs to the far side of each window only. If it were me I'd do short curtains, just a bit down past the sill -- again because I think it more fits the tradition of the room. But some people go beserk if curtains don't touch the floor. Personally I would do a dark deep color, or something in a rich dark pattern of olives, rust, caramel, burgundy, chocolate... velvet Your room looks like a great place to sleep.

What ever color, fabric you choose, go with top down/bottom up shades. It gives you more options...for instance, you might want to see no treatment at all during the day so you can enjoy a full view. Hunter Douglas always is a good choice. For the small windows, remember that you can always hang any window treatments right at the ceiling line and have them stop at the top frame of the window if you want to hide the windows' "square" appearance and create the illusion of length.
