Window Treatment Help: Does window HAVE to have two panels?

I wish I could post a photo, but just can't figure it out! I'm redecorating my master bedroom and ordered my comforter, duvet cover and panels from Pottery Barn. (Audrey Organic Bedding -- I love it! It goes perfectly with my Silver Sage quilt from Restoration Hardware.) On to my question...My king bed is centered between two windows, which have white plantation shutters. My bed is a four poster, and the two posts at the head of the bed are positioned right in front of each window. I'm trying to figure out if one panel per window is appropriate, because if I put up two, they are hanging behind the bed posts. Make any sense? Anyway, I ordered two panels hoping to push each one to the side, framing the bed. Now I'm second guessing myself and wonder if I should've ordered 4. What to do??? Thanks for any help!

What size are your windows?

Skimpy curtains look skimpy, IMO. What about if you extended your rod past the windows a little so that the panels framed the windows instead of covering part of them.

I've done this a couple of times when the situation calls for framing a set of windows or an area rather than using full window treatments. The important thing is not to use a rod that covers the entire window, but to mount a short, decorative rod in the corner of the window where the panel will hang. That way, you don't have a mostly empty rod covering the rest of the top of the window.

I do no think curtains are appropriate in a bathroom, although it could depend on the space. I like drapes in some rooms, although I also know they can "harbor" dust/mites/allergens regardless of what you do. (When I walk through homes with curtains in the bathroom, it does gross me out a bit.) Because our window is behind the tub/hard to reach and we don't have a pretty view out the bathrooms, we got frosted window glass. There is pretty natural light that comes through constantly, but we have privacy.

With how nice your home looks and what appears to be a good amount of window frame depth I would, if I were you, install interior window shutters. I'm a huge fan of plantation style, but traditional shutters would look amazing as well if you prefer smaller louvers. If you prefer stock size panels you may want to check into www.shutterland.com. They have great shutters, both Traditional and Plantation. Also, they come unfinished, so that really keeps the price down. I would look at roller shades and maybe even the possiblity of battery powered ones. They will give you a clean look and clear view of your window openings. If you want curtains, you can use an iron rod and have it bent to the corners of your bay windows. Use a mount at either end and 1 in the middle (screw it in place so the rod doesn't move). You can then close the curtains to the center of the opening without any major issues.

Here's what I'm talking about. I have three sets of windows like this in a big room, with little space between each window area for panels on all sides, so I decided to "frame" the areas instead.

We have a similar situation: the wall and hearth get in the way of a second panel. We could have had shades or something made, but this was decorated on a very tight budget, and we needed something off the shelf.

I don't have a photo of the entire end of room together, but you can sorta see from this:

I meant to add ... this is how it looks stacked on one side (obviously no bed in between), and we used an entire rod because we close the curtain. Are you going to close the curtains ever?

Jboling, my situation is just like yours -- just add around three more feet in the space between the two windows. (Just enough space to hang a portrait of my kids sitting on the beach over my bed!) I like your little rods! Thanks for posting these pictures. And I appreciate everyone's help! One day when I have time, I'm really going to learn how to post pictures here!

I think it's really just a matter of personal preference. For example, in my home office, I have a window that abutts a corner, much like the one that segbrown has pictured in his first photo he attached. And another window 24" away from that first window. Both windows are located behind a desk with a rolling chair.
I created cornices for the windows, and b/c both windows already have wooden blinds on them I bought a pre-fab panel that I plan on cutting in half and using both of the halves on the outer sides of both windows.
Functionally, having two panels on BOTH sides of EACH window would not work for me, as the drapes are likely to be caught in the wheels of the rolling chair. So, I just improvised- especially since the panels are going to be faux anyways.
Again, its a matter of personal preference. What do YOU want? You're the one that's going to have to live there :)

I think you should hang them and see how they look and if you are still wondering move the other to the other side to see how two looks and then order another pair if need be! :)

We did one panel on each side of a four poster in my mom's old room. It was custom & extra full so it covered the top of the window with fullness and swagged to the side.

Another look I like very much is when you put drapes behind the bed. If you wanted you could even incorporate some type of canopy.

I love this one. Sorry it is so big. I hope it is okay to post this picture from a blog?!
