Home Decorating Design Dilemma

window treatment help

Looking for ideas for window treatments for the great room. Style of home is modern craftsman-ish. We need to manage the late afternoon sun that will shine across the TV over the fireplace. I’ll also need something in the front of the house where the street light shines in the window. Suggestions welcome.

I would look into solar cellular shades that let you adjust brightness where top and bottom can be moved as needed.

well, it just depends what you want. if those are real oak floors, you can always have them patched in, but that means the rest of the floor will need refinishing. For sure I'd put in some windows along that wall, and try and have the sink under it. Cabinets. you can do inexpensive or high end. I wouldn't nix the idea of a carpenter custom building some for your space. RTA cabinets are actually decent. hire someone to install. If you're on a budget, I prob wouldn't use HD or Lowes. you're paying them to be the middleman contractor, and they sub out their work. Sometimes their countertops are a decent price though. talk to a kitchen designer or an actual kitchen refinishing company. I found a great one on Yelp (all 5 stars) and they were amazing. I had mine painted, but they also did custom carpentry, refacing, vent hoods, and everything in between. If you could find a company like that, I'd go that route. walk around a stone yard to see what's avail for countertops/islands. Some people like ikea. It just depends the look you want. the rest of the house is very nice. looks like you have plenty of room. don't know why they did such a tiny kitchen with all of that room! however, for 30K, you're going to have to DIY, learn to DIY, or learn how to shop for bargains. I'd still list your current kitchen for sale. someone would want it. they can come in and take it apart and charge 1K for everything. (to demo all of that, you're looking at over 1K anyway! ) hiring a KD for a custom layout design wouldn't be a bad idea

Hard to understand why a northeastern exposure would get a lot of sun. Perhaps a small amount in the early morning in midsummer, but it has to be out of the sun after that. If it's more eastern, than northern, a little more morning sun. My solution would be to plant small shade trees not to far from those windows.

I love the dressers where they are! But to your question: Dark wood slat blinds would be classic but if you want curtains, your room is so traditional there's nothing wrong with having one very wide panel that hangs to the far side of each window only. If it were me I'd do short curtains, just a bit down past the sill -- again because I think it more fits the tradition of the room. But some people go beserk if curtains don't touch the floor. Personally I would do a dark deep color, or something in a rich dark pattern of olives, rust, caramel, burgundy, chocolate... velvet Your room looks like a great place to sleep.

Given the number of windows, it‘s important to consider ease of functionality. Also, you don’t want anything that filters too much light resulting in room becoming too dark. Modern/craftsman-ish 😊 would suit light filtering solar shades and consider the movement style.

I usually use solar shades to control heat and UV I use 10% most of time the darker the color the better the view out of them so charcoal or bronze depending on your decor. They give you day time privacy and I add drapes for night time privacy .

What ever color, fabric you choose, go with top down/bottom up shades. It gives you more options...for instance, you might want to see no treatment at all during the day so you can enjoy a full view.

Hunter Douglas always is a good choice.

Thanks so much everyone. This is really helpful. I have been looking at the solar shades. And I love the idea of the up and down shades. We have two acres of woods behind us so I definitely don’t want to block the view. No need for privacy in the great room as we’re on a slope and that space is about 20’ off the ground. Someone told me that the Home Depot brand of shades is made by Hunter Douglas?

Kate thinks, or I should say feels, Home Depot has contracts with all these large companies but that the goods they sell from those companies, like Hunter Douglas, are inferior quality. Haha.

I have no idea if the quality is worse, but the measuring and installation is iffy. A small retailer could be a bit more expensive but you could get more personalized service. With lot of these small outfits the owner could be the installer.
