Comments (10)I am VERY ambivalent about these Renaissance roses - they do have those generous flowers and also are graced with very long stems - excellent cutting roses which last well in the vase and have a good fragrance but......... They are enormous, ungainly, stiffly upright and out of all proportion to anything else in the garden. Philippa is almost 3m high but lacking any of the arching grace of a climber or rambler - it just points upright (can't reach most of the blooms to deadhead or even pick). Clair/Liliana is shorter but only because I have moved it (twice) quicksmart and been ruthless with the secateurs. The other one (Millie? one of those roses which has numerous names) was a gift so am stuck with it (from youngest son so have to put up with it). To compound the horror, they are not the healthiest roses, invariably defoliating with BS and in such an enormous rose, this is unbearable. Every year, I plan to remove them completely (to the compost) and inevitably, the sheer effort involved, plus the first good flush, delays the chainsaw (which it will deffo require). In all, I rarely remove plants (nature usually helps out with premature death) and more or less ignore these roses for great swathes of the year......but had I known then, what I know now, I would have stuck with Poulsen's groundcover roses (a different kettle of fish altogether) and avoided the Renaissance series altogether....See MoreRevisiting Renaissance roses
Comments (12)Thanks for all the responses.Veilchen - some one on GW has mentioned that Helena blooms fail to open at times and that is the only reason it went to fourth place in the list of the roses from this series. The four roses I have throw multiple sturdy canes that grow upright and bloom in clusters (sophia ,clair and julia - 3to5 per cluster and Amelia blooms in sprays-upto 16 flowers.Lea is supposed to be a climber . Karenforroses-Thanks for posting the pic of Isabel Renaissance. It is going to be on the list next time I order renaissance roses. Athenanwi-You seem to have succeeded in growing the hortico bare roots.Out of 12 or so roses I bought from them I have only one rose .I would love to have some of the roses only available from them ,but Iam not ordering from them if I can help it.I hope I will have better luck with pickering. Trishaw - Can you share you opinions and expereience with these roses ? Dana...See MoreSmaller, More Efficient Homes On The Horizon
Comments (30)I just posted to the "McMansions" thread before I read this one, where everyone is saying pretty much exactly what I was trying to.... Anyway, I subscribe to the TNSBH concepts and looked for a house with a flexible, fully usable floor plan. We went from about 3500sf with full basement for storage to our current 2000sf. Had to declutter all the big stuff and still quite a bit of the smaller stuff to go. Added elderly mother and two guinea pigs to the already existing husband working at home, two kids, dog and three parrots (but the parrots live out on the lanai). Sailboat in backyard serves as 3BR/2BA guesthouse; or guests can opt for the pullout sofa or blow up mattresses. My SIL lives in what I'd guess is a 3500sf house and put an offer in for a larger short-sale in her neighborhood. She's kind of stuck because her house has a weird, inflexible floor plan with lots of open floor space. For example, you could hold a small yoga class in her bathroom because it's just huge with all the bathroom stuff around the walls and open floor in the middle. And it has upstairs and downstairs foyers that are as big as our small bedroom. Can't do much with a foyer. So her only choice is to go bigger if she wants to stay in the same schools because they only built giant homes all around. Her neighborhood in Rocklin is one of the older ones so the homes there are "smaller" than all the newer ones. It's going to be interesting to see what the builders start doing in her neighborhood now...(although it's almost all built out now so that I can barely find her house.)...See MoreWanting to expand my tomato horizons. Comments (26)Fast Forward : A Year Or So Later. On the plant spacing I have done some improvement and have become more generous : -) I have allocated about 3 sq-ft per plant. that is 20% increase. I must say that, this just give more head room and air space. Even in 2.5 sq-ft area the roots will have more than enough soil volume ; Almost 16 gallons. OTOH: if the real estate were no object , I would give each plant a 3ft by 3ft area, ie, 9 sq-ft. An then put a nice big cage around each. ON THE VARIETY: I am growing ONE Old German plant ( as in OP ). My OG, seems to be one of the slow growing indets in my garden. It is also very slow in getting into sexual phase. It has just few tiny buds, where 50% of other varieties are setting fruits an the rest have flowers....See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
