Sounds exactly like Trader Joe's 'Wine Country Chicken Salad'. As we know, things like this are manufactured in one place and sold under a lot of different names. (It's very tasty.)

It could be sourced as bookwoman suggests.

We find the TJ product has much too much mayonnaise - it might better be described as mayonnaise sandwich spread lightly flavored with pieces of chicken, cranberries, and nuts. And, too salty. Oftentimes prepared concoctions like this and other store or container bought mac, potato and tuna salad are like that.

Better to make your own, a bit less convenient but not so hard to do.

When you want chicken salad and don't have all the ingredients, why NOT buy pre made chicken salad from wal mart or trader joes,, eh? lol

A convenience to have on a Sunday when alone, and so handy to make a sandwich. Mine was on rye my favorite.

glenda, many people try to avoid salty foods, still others don't like preparations with an excessive amount of mayonnaise - in trying to make healthy choices of what they eat. My comment was directed toward them. offering two good reasons we've found to not buy the TJ product. Everyone makes their own choices according to their preferences.

Like many convenience foods, the convenience comes at a cost, a less healthy end result than if the same thing were made by oneself.

Next time I'm in Walmart I'm definitely going to look for this! HEB here has a Turkey Salad, made with turkey, cranberries, pecans, mayonnaise and maybe some onion (not sure about celery or what else it might have) that is really good, but I'm thinking some chicken salad would be even better. I'm flexible on chicken salad. Different recipes can suit me just fine.

I was craving chicken salad served on celery sticks today, but we didn't make that. Generally I don't like eating cold foods in winter, but the warm days aren't too far ahead.

Since I never go to Walmart but go to Traders every week, I'll look for theirs. I love cranberries and pecans in a chicken salad. My mother always put celery in egg salad and chicken salad and I'd pick the pieces out. I don't like mayo so if there's too much I'll give it to my husband.

Walmart also has some pretty decent potato salads. The Amish Style one is good on its own but also makes a great basic potato salad for doctoring up. DH likes their Deviled Egg Style Potato salad occasionally. I don't know why people get on the "everything must be better homemade" bandwagon. Many prepared products are sourced from the same vendors whether its from Walmart or some high end store.

Yes! We really like WalMart's Amish potato salad, too.

Have not tried WM's chicken salad but do like the cranberry version from Aldi. Haven't purchased it in a while so don't remember what else is in it.

Well, it's something to try thanks for the recommendation Glenda. I like pecans and cranberries in chicken salad. I like to put grapes in mine when I make home made. My DH likes the Amish potato salad from WM but I'm not crazy about macaroni salad or potato salad no matter where it comes from.

I'm sorry some people couldn't refrain from posting negative remarks on your thread.

I like chicken salad and rarely think to make it. But I can be that way with sandwiches in general. I do enjoy one but I want someone to make and hand it to me. DH complies sometimes. I'm glad you enjoyed your premixed and will consider, might be the Trader Joe's as I rarely shop in Walmart. Ours is not one of the nicer stores - I can have some cleanliness issues with it I have not found in others in other communities.

I was one of the last holdouts on buying a rotisserie chicken. I always did my own at home. Then, realized I can't buy a whole chicken, cook it, for about $5 and there are so many things that can be done with them. BIL has been doing a lot of chicken and dumplings with purchased cooked chicken, his frozen broth this year and I love it.

There used to be a little eatery in the middle of a plant nursery I'd visit every year. I always ordered the same thing, their rosy chicken salad sandwich with red grapes, red onion, red currants. They'd put it in a pita for me so I could eat it while driving. Last stop of that special shopping day and timing would be warning a need to get onto the freeway and on my way again ;)

I truly love chicken salad and can be flexible. But I am supposed to watch my sodium and fat intake. I often get tempted by the many offerings in a deli counter. I rarely purchase them because:

Also, I seem to notice a few too many recall notices on ready made foods — samonella, listeria and what not. There probably are very few recall notices, and perhaps I am easily spooked. Does anyone else here think about that?

I have had two or three very memorable food poisoning experiences — 30 and 50 years ago., but not ever from deli ready made foods. But making long distance calls to Ralph O’Rourke on the porcelain telephone and sleeping on a tile floor all night certainly made an impression.

Now, after hearing of Glenda’s chicken salad, I want to put Chix salad on my list of ”To Makes.” I make one with tender poached chix breast meat (torn); finely minced candied ginger that’s soaked in white wine; yellow raisins, cury powder, a bit of mayo, sour cream and yogurt. Serve on artisan bread with some fresh greens. Yum.

@sephia_wa, I took this photo off the label of chicken salad purchased today. Note that it contains less than 1/2 the sodium (210mg vs 450mg) from the label information you posted. Perhaps that was for a different product? This one did contain more sugar though, 10g vs 6g.

Petalique, your mixture sounds a lot like Coronation Chicken.

Glenda is probably responsible for some of us going out and buying some. Myself included. I got the Trader's version tonight. I'll critique it later.

@floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK — why thank you for letting me know. I had never heard of Coronation Chicken. That was likely what the chef at that deli had made.

I had had this delicious chicken salad an upscale standalone deli-store in a victorian house in Acton, Massachusetts (USA) back in the late 1980s. It was so interesting that I began jotting down the flavors and textures so that I could reverse engineer it in my own kitchen later that week. I was pretty successful.

I tore the poached chicken, rather than cut the pieces. This gives much better flavor because you create these nooks and crannies and places for the dressing and seasonings to latch onto. I took some pieces of soft candied ginger and cooked/soften them in some white wine. Then I mashed the ginger pieces out into a thin layer, then micro diced that flattened ginger. I added soft golden raisins, curry powder and then a mixture of sour cream, yogurt and mayo. Then let it rest for a bit before putting it on rustic bread.

I have not made this in a while and don’t know that I ever wrote down the recipe. I should make it soon. It is good.

And so now I can surmise from where the owner chef got that recipe.

I am not adverse to prepared deli salads but I rarely buy them. I may just be too unimaginative or stuck in tradition but the already prepared salads rarely have the ingredients or seasonings that I prefer. IOW, I like my homemade versions better :-) This is particularly true for potato salad but also chicken salad, tuna or egg salad.

And they are very simple to make so no hardship starting from scratch. My local grocery sells already shredded cooked chicken (from that day's rotisserie chickens that didn't sell) so I make chicken salad often. I usually do not add any fruit or sweet ingredients as that limits its versatility, preferring to dress chicken salad sandwiches with cranberry sauce as desired.

I had my chicken salad from Traders for lunch in a panini with mozzarella cheese and egg grilled four minutes in seeded Traders bread and it was good. A little mushy for my taste and it won't be a regular but it was good for a change-up.

I suspect the mushy consistency was from excessive mayo.

perhaps if the mayo is excessive, one could simply rinse a few tablespoons under water to remove the mayo, then add this back into the rest of the salad? Sounds weird, I know, but I bet it would work!

Petalique reminded me of my favorite chicken salad recipe - I haven't made it for several years, and will have to find the recipe - it also is made with a light touch of curry, and grapes, maybe celery (it's been that long that I am not at all sure.)

I was a big fan of the chicken salad that was served in the downtown Lazarus department store in Columbus. They also had wonderful tea breads - Lemon Zucchini, and Spinach Orange. I would always get some of each to take home.

The chicken salad sounds good. I may get some to make sandwiches for upcoming game night.
