Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 2/19
Comments (21)@RNmomof2 zone 5 congrats on your changes and the improvement in your meds. @gsciencechick - glad you got such good feedback at your visit and have found activities that you like and want to do regularly. It is probably true you don't need a CGM, but mine really does help keep me in check. And I've learned a lot. Like from a purely glucose level - one day we went to Panera and I got the big Greek salad with grilled chicken, and the potato chips for my side. Ate all the salad first, then the chips - no spike. Another day I ate a handful of potato chips on an empty stomach (less than the side at Panera) - spike. Then another day I ate chips and queso, thought to myself I can't get another spike, so I did my weight workout when I got home - muscles must have used it up - no spike. So - you see my issue with crunchy chips this week!! It's been not the best week. I've been eating more than usual - several social meals out, not as much walking as usual, no pickleball, and only one resistance workout. So, there's that :) I'm still trying to work in a long fast tomorrow to get me back on the food track. The weather looks great today and tomorrow, so at least I'll get in long walks outside. I've been rationalizing some not so healthy foods lately too, which is a habit I don't want to get in. So, I am trying to get past just the calories, or even the spike, and remember that food is medicine and it is important to my body to eat the right things, not just the right amounts. That a healthy body is more than just my weight. That the fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds and good quality protein are telling my cells good things. They are fueling me towards better health not just a number on the scale. Rinse and repeat:)...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 3/26
Comments (31)I listened to a portion of the podcast above and read through the document Sue shared (as well as another similar one I found). I think there are some interesting points and certainly some guidelines I can roll into my weekly diet -- but I don't think I can completely follow the "reset". Sure, there are things that will be hard because I have leaned into the carbs in recent past but there are a handful of deal breakers for me -- like coffee. Bullet-proof coffee does not sound appealing to me and my early morning coffee is seriously one of my joys in the day. I often go to sleep looking forward to waking in the early hours and having my coffee. It's part of a ritual of self care .. 1-2 hrs of quiet time before emails and calls start coming in. Still, there are lessons to be had .. I know I need to make some changes in order to start losing weight again .. so I will be digging in deeper to the program and recipes. I think my biggest fault right now is that I have been spending very little thought and time on preparing food. It is partially that I've been lazy and partially that I've been bored. And maybe a bit defiant also. Sometimes, I just eat what I want-- or think I want. I need to be more intentional... and accountable. @Sueb20 have you started the 21-day re-set yet? If so, how is it going? @legomom23 I appreciate the information/links you bring to our group! So helpful! Like you, I have been giving into items on the "slow down" list ... and I think they are the reason I have been feeling slow and bloated. I will be starting there! @Zalco/bring back Sophie! sorry to hear you are still dealing with house issues. Stress usually causes me to eat much less but lately, it has gone the other direction. Protein and veggies sounds like a good strategy -- I know I can deal with life better when I am feeling better/stronger. Hope things start going more smoothly with the repairs/issues. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and experiences. It is so helpful to hear what others are doing to improve their health! My eye infection is getting better but it is still annoying and gross... and it is adding to the issues I already had with my vision. Hoping it will clear in another handful of days. Thanks for the kind thoughts. Have a great rest of your week!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/2/2023
Comments (34)G'morning! My apologies for not being around; we have been busy with 4th of July festivities. I want to take a moment to thank jill302 for her kind words in the last thread. I had mentioned that my knees were hurting and she wished me well. So, "thank you, Jill!" - it was much appreciated. As far as beauty goes, I think every single one of you is beautiful inside and out, even though I've never laid eyes on any of you! :) It's interesting that being beautiful has come up in this thread. I was sitting in a bar over the weekend having a beer when the 20something woman sitting next to me, turned and said, "you know, you are really beautiful." Let me tell you, my soon to be 65 year old self was shocked! At first, I thought she was pulling my leg in a mean spirited way, but after chatting with her for a few minutes I think she was sincere. Even if she was not, I'm going to take it that way. Over the weekend, we were at our vacation home and it was very hot. 106 on Saturday and it stayed in the triple digits the entire weekend dropping to a cool 101 by the time we headed home on Tuesday. Having moved to a much cooler climate a couple of years ago, that was a real shock to my system, but I did manage to get a walk in every day that we were there. They were much shorter than what I usually do, but at least I got out there and got moving. Food wise, I did ok. We had bbq ribs with potato salad, but the other sides were watermelon and corn. I stuck to my smaller portions and had only one rib, just a small serving of potato salad, half a cob of corn and a couple of slices of watermelon. The worst thing I ate over the weekend was a slice of pecan pie from the ice cream social held by the local church. But, the pie is a yearly tradition and I wasn't going to deprive myself of that. I didn't eat it all in one sitting; just a few bites on Tuesday, a little bit yesterday and I still have half of that slice left. I did drink more beer than usual, but we were having a good time and I'm not going to beat myself up over that. Yesterday, I was back to my regular walk and I'm about to walk two miles to the farmers market to buy peaches and strawberries. This morning, I tried on several pairs of pants that did not fit me last week, but they fit me today (and not just that I was able to button them, but they really fit) - yay! What prompted me to try them on was putting on my regular jeans this morning and noticing that they were quite loose around the waist. Loose enough that I needed a belt to hold them up. I feel like I woke up slimmer this morning; does weight loss happen over night? Anyway, I'm quite happy with how the week and weekend went. To top it all off, hubby and I had a wonderful time together so I'm in a great mood. Funky, I'll chime in that I have a friend who uses the trekking poles for hiking and walking around her neighborhood. She doesn't have vision or balance issues, but she finds that she feels much more confident using them, especially over rough terrain. Because of my bad knee, I've been think of getting a pair as well. To all of you - keep up the good work, congratulate yourself for your successes and don't get discouraged over setbacks as we start each day with a clean slate....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 2/4/2024
Comments (41)Oakley, I hope you are seeing an endocrinologist and will enroll in a diabetes management program through your health insurance. It sounds like you need guidance, and that you could be shortchanging yourself by substituting the internet for sound, ongoing medical advice. Jojoco, you’re still well within the healthy BMI range and clearly don’t ”need” to lose weight, but I understand how good it can feel to have control over something like that in your life— especially when you’ve lost control of other things. I do weigh every day and as long as I stay within a five pound range I no longer worry about my weight. Just eating in a restaurant can cause a two lb increase on my scale from additional sodium alone. I have—almost— eliminated alcohol from my diet as was recommended for my autoimmune issues, and that caused a noticeable but not ongoing drop in weight 18 months ago. I track my food intake assiduously, more now to note how I feel and how much energy I have after eating certain foods. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to track and weigh as long as they don’t become ends unto themselves....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
