Temporary grass recommendation for full sun, zone 7A

I sprayed all of my lawn with weed killer last year, in preparation to sow new grass in September. But then the guy dropped the tree on my house, and that took a back seat to everything else. So now I mostly have a 1 acre mud pit :-/

The grass I bought is really too expensive to sow in March and it not survive the summer, so I think I'd rather hang on to it until September.

Can you all recommend a grass that I can sow in March that would come up quickly, look good for this year and prevent erosion, but then when it's gone it's gone without casting seed? I'd like to be able to cut it short in September and overseed with my permanent grass.

I'm in zone 7A, and most of the lawn is in full sun with underground sprinklers. A smaller section is in dense shade, but the grass has never grown there so I won't cry too much if this temporary grass doesn't grow there either.

An added bonus would be if I could sow it in June, too. I have a specialist coming in June to work on the drainage, so I'll have to sow over about 500 sq.ft that they'll be digging up.

Have you thought of spreading what some refer to as Contractor's grass? It is a fast growing mixture of seeds that was created exactly for the situation that you have. ie construction work that leaves a bare are that can not be properly planted because of the weather and time of year.

I have never looked into it so do not know the mix of grasses.

A little farther south, hybrid bermuda is considered to be a contractor grade turf due to mass production, supply and demand.

You could just use the cheapest stuff you can find at Walmart for something to get you into June.

@jlcjlr - “decided to try the Fireglow…I’ll be planting one in full sun and one in afternoon shade”. That was back in 2010…13 years ago…curious to know how your Fireglow JM’s are doing now? I’m considering a Fireglow for my property, but I don’t have any mature trees so it would be getting full sun the majority of the day in zone 7A in the mid-Atlantic region. Worried that the leaves would scorch. Also, how is the fall color on them? I’m looking for really bright scarlet red fall color…the kind of red that stops you in your tracks with the sun setting behind it! Thanks…would love to get an update!

Help! Planting sugar baby for the first time (Zone 7a VA)

I've been growing icebox size watermelon (sugar baby and its hybrid cousin tiger baby) in a 25-gallon half whiskey barrel for the past five years, and it works well in my situation. I plant my seeds indoors and transplant them very gently when they have just formed their first true leaves and daytime temperatures are reliably above 70. I've grown four or five plants in the barrel and gotten an average of two watermelons for each plant. I did try trellissing them, but as soon as I see the melons begin to form, I gently rearrange the vines so the fruit is resting on the ground or some sturdy platform. The vines still range over the trellis, which is very pretty, but eventually they climb out of the pot and extend a few feet out from it on the ground. My melons are usually around five pounds, which may be a little smaller than ones grown in the ground, but they are so sweet and clean. The planting mix I've been using is the 5-1-1 they talk about in the Container forum. It's five parts pine bark fines to one part each perlite and peat moss. My situation may not be ideal, but I can't grow melons in the ground, and this works well for my small family. Here's a photo from last July. And here's one from June, a year earlier:

vgkg - I’ve started some tomatoes by seed. So I’ll need to find a place for them somewhere. I was originally thinking in the planter where I have the cool weather veggies, but since those aren’t doing well I’m afraid the tomatoes won’t either. Daninthedirt- why is it hard to believe that that area gets that much sun? My house and my neighbors are 25’ apart and in-line with each other. They don’t have any landscaping or structures that would shade the area. There are no homes behind us, just woods that go down to a large river. I see you edited your response. Correct, I’m not talking about the area between the two homes, I’m talking about the small area when you first enter the backyard from that gate. In the photo I’m in the backyard facing the front yard. Rbrt - the arborvitae on the left of the photo are 4yrs old and around 8’. There are no arborvitae directly across from them. I staggered them and started the other row of screening on the fence line (right side in the photo).

For a 10 or 15' strip along the road, use a low-growing, sun tolerant groundcover, like 'Blue pacific' or 'Blue rug' juniper ... or whatever people are using and does well in your locale. Beyond the strip near the road, you could have the slope hydroseeded with Lespedeza. For shady areas you'd use a different groundcover, of course. I don't know if it's OK to use there, but my personal favorite for large scale shady areas would be English ivy. If you want to hunt specifically for natives, do some Googling for sun (or shade) groundcovers.

My hunch is if you do nothing, crab grass and other weeds will take over in short order and do what you want. This is what happened to my next door neighbor after they cut down some trees. You just need to keep it mowed so it doesn't look terrible. In August, spray everything with roundup to get ready for September seeding.

Perennial Ryegrass without a doubt, but you'll have to water and fertilizer during the summer months.

Oh well, @Xavier Lemos, I literally JUST ordered annual ryegrass 2 days ago! I had considered perennial rye grass since it's in the permanent grass's mix, but it was more than twice the price of the annual :-/ I didn't know if it would even come up, and I didn't want to waste that much money.

Assuming that it does come up, do you think I should spray it with Round Up in August? Or does it match perenniel rye closely enough that it doesn't really matter?

FWIW, I have sprinklers in place, so water shouldn't be an issue. And I'd gotten into the habit of spreading corn meal gluten monthly.

Annual ryegrass is the wrong choice this time of year, it will germinate and die shortly after. Perennial ryegrass is more permanent, but without water during the summer months, it will die also.

You don't need to spray Round Up in August if you use perennial Ryegrass, it's very compatible with Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass.

Annual ryegrass and perennial ryegrass are visually VERY different, annual is light green and wide bladed and perennial is dark green and fine bladed.
