Powder room - no backsplash blue walls UPDATE #3

3rd Update. No backsplash....SW Naval walls (at the moment), gold fixtures and this canvas. Ignore the size of the sconces...I couldn't make them any smaller.

2nd Update: No backsplash, blue walls (trying to figure out what blue?!), blue/gold canvas and gold fixtures.

Mock up with Dress Blues.

Update: So I think I have decided to not tile any walls. The current plan is to paint the walls and use a cool bold mural or artwork on wall opposite the door.

As part of our kitchen remodel, we will be remodeling the powder room off of the kitchen.

Current powder room has a furniture type vanity with a vessel sink and no backsplash or sidesplash. We tiled the entire wet wall up to about 40". The new vanity we've selected is 42" and is similar (no vessel sink) in that it doesn't have a backsplash or sidesplash.

Thoughts on backsplash? Should we just do a 3-4" backsplash above the counter? Or tile up to ?? tall? Or tile the entire wall? Or no backsplash at all? We currently have a towel stand on the counter (which I hate). I want to have a hook on the wall, but I worry that water will drip down the wall when people go to grab the towel. So would we tile the wall (or just up to ? tall?) to the left of the vanity as well?

This is the drawing of the powder room. And a mock up of the vanity, lights and tile on the entire wall (have not decided for sure on this tile...this is one I had saved for potential backsplash in kitchen). Also not sure if we will do sconces in there or not. We have them now, but they are too low and will need to be raised. We considered getting rid of them and just doing the ceiling light. But I really like the sconces lol. May end up putting them above the sink in the kitchen if they don't work out in PR.

Anyone have a similar set up? What did you do? Thank you :)

Makes sense about a dark ceiling where you mostly watch TV. I've seen painted ceilings and always think they look great. But I have never done it...always do ceiling white on all ceilings. The suggestions you posted look awesome! Thanks for sharing. I was looking at some today and found a giant blue eyeball on the ceiling. Looked really cool, but not my vibe. My hubby would for sure think I've lost my mind lol!

I ended up buying this canvas today. It has several blue colors that could work on walls or ceiling. I like the circles in it because I also found this mirror that I like. I was wondering about doing a beige/gray color (SW Eider White may work?) on walls and dark blue on ceiling? Or one of the medium blues on walls and dark on ceiling? Or just stick with safe ceiling white and beige/gray on the walls.

These are all SW colors. They looked good on my phone, but now on my computer I'm not so sure :/ Once I get the canvas, I will match colors to my SW fan deck and then order some samples. I hate picking paint colors!!

@Lynn Lou I love it!!!!! No wonder it was color of the year! At least YOUR first coat doesn't look like it was done in crayon like mine did. I can't wait to see the mirror and mural and everything else in there. I even think Bare will look stunning with that color as a backdrop. While we wait for everything else maybe get a shot of Bare in there. Thanks so much for sharing the picture!

I am curious to see on of your montages with your four different blues. I bet it's fine and what the color police would recommend.☺️

Hi. We installed out kitchen in 2012. We still haven't chosen or decided on a backslpash - it's the painted wall. I have a creamy Egyptian marble, - don't remember the name. I like unstructured European vintage-y kitchens. Many of them don't have backsplashes either. My stainless range has a stainless backsplash directly behind it. I had picked out some mini-clear glass subway tile for the backsplash that coincidentally matches my Prescott Green paint color perfectly but what if I decide to change wall color one day? Just this week I started thinking maybe I made my backsplash tile decision three years ago which was to have none. Our marble installers tried very hard to discourage us from marble in the kitchen but I have not regretted it. All those kitchens in southern Europe can't be wrong. FYI - If you are considering glass backsplash look at a product call 3-Form it comes in an amazing variety of colors,textures and imbedded items, two good friends used it in their kitchens. http://www.3-form.com/ Do what speaks to you in your home. yep that's my kitchen. Sorry it's not in your budget, but gpraceman does have a good idea about granite tiles. I have seen these used in place of granite slabs for the counter, when a budget dictated it. "To Me", they did not look that bad. I had to redo the area of the granite where the cook top is, due to a bad choice I made about cooktops, a 36" semi-circle Caldera. It died in about a year and the company went broke, so I had to replace it with a rectangular induction cooktop, Hence the granite rework. Well I could find Granite remnants (Arandis Gold) for next to nothing, (I paid about $75 for a little less than a half slab. So you may be able to do that too, and then have it cut to sizes you want for the tile, myself, the bigger the better, and the less grout lines. Thanks for your kind words about my kitchen, it is pretty unique, and as we tell folks here, Do what makes you happy, after all, it's your kitchen. For those of you that do like tiles and grout, that's great, as long as it's what you want, and you're not following others or doing what you "Think", might help sell the house later. Gary

I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post.

I'm sure Bare will be in there tonight since the vanity will be in there. It won't be plumbed yet, but I know he'll have to check it out. I posted him checking out the kitchen cabinets on my kitchen post. Anything new and he has to be there to inspect it lol.

Here are my four blues :) None of the online pics look like the actual paint color in my spaces. Goblin in dining room, storm cloud in the office ( both old PPG/Glidden colors) and smoky blue in the laundry room.

The Naval blue looks great! Can wait to see it with the canvas up.

It is obvious what color you like, so using it around your house sounds fine to me. If every shade works for the room it’s in, and you’re happy, who cares what others say?

Designers say one way to make home feel cohesive is to use the same color scheme throughout, and in each room you can vary the shade and intensity of color used and you can vary whether the color is predominate or accent.

And I really am not worried about it. I like what I like and if someone doesn't like it, then so be it. It just hit me that we have four blues on the first floor and I was like wow. Our first house 25 years ago I was obsessed with blue. When we moved into this house I wanted nothing to do with blue anymore. And it's funny that now I want ALL THE BLUES lol! We have blue in our bedroom that I picked in a hurry....and I'm not a fan of it. I keep saying we will repaint one of these days. But it doesn't matter since no one sees it. And we have a fun blue in our gym in the basement.

Here is a shot of the canvas. I LOVE it! My MIL joked that I better secure it to the wall otherwise she might take it.

I've been thinking a lot about blue lately. We ve been going through a lot of movements that I think all trace back to wood flooring's rise in popularity. Wood floors are warm and cozy. But too much of a good thing led to white cabinets instead of wood cabinets with our wood floors. I've read comments dissing wood furniture. Again, too much wood. And what color is wood? Basically a dull orange. And what color compliments orange? Blue. Blue just makes sense with wood. So not only do you have design sense, but you are an artist. There!

Bare did not cooperate for a picture tonight because Beacon chased him in there. I don't think he ever realized there was a counter for him to jump onto lol!

Beacon.... The black and white cutie. ☺️ My cats always jumped to high ground when threatened. I found my kittens on top of the draperies one time when I came home. Cheap drapes, no worries, except I worried the kittens would fall.

@K L Beacon is lucky he is so cute. He was a little stinker when he was a puppy. I seriously wanted to give him back to the breeder lol! Bare has several high spots to escape to and he has his own room with a short gate for him to leap over while keeping Beacon out.

@ptreckel Thank you!! I'm so excited about it. I may have to drag the canvas back in there tonight just to stare at it. Also LOL at car/cat :) Sometimes I look back at what I've typed on here and see so many typos.

One thing about the vanity that I did not think through....there is a rail on the bottom which will make cleaning under it more challenging. Previous vanity was open underneath, which was annoying enough and I said I would NEVER get another vanity like that. And here I am with similar vanity, but now even more challenging to clean under. Wonder if I can train my roomba to climb over the rail lol!

The plumbing was finshed today so we finally have a potty on the first floor again! Love the color of the faucet with the vanity and paint.

Look closely and you can see evidence of a naked little helper. Bare attempted to help out with the electrical work lol!

The last option with the natural vanity and the tiled walls is classic yet modern and will never go out of style, where the blue is a little trendy and may fade. Im actually working on my home as well and was in the same dilemma and Im going with a very similar look as the natural wood with the tiles. Good Luck! Would love to see the finished bathrroom. @K L Nothing too exciting at the moment. Hubby patched a few areas last night, so maybe paint touch up will happen tonight.

@Pauline Riskakis-Georgiadis I ended up not doing tiles. Which makes me a bit nervous will water dripping behind the counter. I'm planning on installing the tiniest line of clear silicone between the wall and counter to prevent water from running down the wall behind. Just turning off the faucet with wet hands causes drips behind the faucet. Good luck with your project as well! It sounds like it will be lovely!

It didn’t come with one. Some that include one often don’t match anyway. That’s what started this whole discussion. Tile just above the counter, tile up to wainscot or tile the entire wall. I decided no backsplash but now wondering if that was the right choice lol. I like the look without it. I’ll just have to give hubby a good lesson on hand washing! Someone commented on another post that their hubby was an aggressive hand washer. I was like, mine too lol!

I too love a back splash. I like tile up a wall at least 4 feet high. Maybe because my home is so active.

My powder room does not have one and it drives me insane. I am constantly washing walls and wiping up water spots. I know I will be constantly wiping tile, but tile just cleans much easier, for me at least.

My other bathrooms have wall tile also and I just love it.

@njmomma Thanks! I'm starting to worry I may not be able to train my husband to not make a mess lol! I've seen this vanity in random places lately (even in a real estate listing for a home not far from us) and no backsplash to be found...and no hand towel hanging on the side wall. So now I'm rethinking having a hook with a towel on the side wall. Maybe I'll just have a folded towel on the counter.

So not much progress in here really. I did get the hardware installed on the vanity (it came with it and is a pretty good match to the faucet). The electrician got the sconces installed. Couldn't switch them separately like I had hoped (can't remember why now), but that is fine. They were swtiched together before and really I don't see anyone turning on one or the other. I asked hubby if he would help me hang the mirror tomorrow night, so we will see if that happens. There is still some patching and touch that has to happen in here. But I just want to get one room finished! He finished the touch up in the laundry room tonight, so that one should be done once I remove the protective cardboard etc.

It is really hard to get a good pic because the room is so small. The lights aren't really that blinding in person. I think the bulbs in the sconces are 3000k and ceiling lights are 2700k. That's all I had on hand for the electrician to make sure they worked. So I'll need to change those out. They don't seem that different in person, but maybe I'll wait until the mirror goes up to change them out. The mirror is huge and will reflect the ceiling light. I really wish we would have replaced all of the drywall in here. It wasn't really on anyone's radar when we did the drywall in the kitchen. And they didn't know I was doing dark navy blue, which shows every imperfection. Oh well, I will probably be the only person who notices the issues.

Couple options for hand towels. The basket is for folded paper towels. You may remember I like paper towels in a powder room.

Yes, I remembered your paper towel idea and it is up for consideration. We had a counter towel holder previously and I just didn't care for it. Towels were too long for it. I bought a taller one for our bathroom and it looked like a toilet paper dispenser lol. I do like the one you posted with the marble base. May have to try that one. OMG...I saw that gold giraffe and want to get him for the kitchen! Not sure how it would function as a paper towel dispenser, but it sure is cute. Thanks so much for all of the ideas!

@RedRyder LOL...you are right! The couple times a year we have guests over they will for sure be dragged in there to see it!

@K L I ended up ordering one very similar to the one you posted. The base on the one I got looks almost identical to the counter of the vanity. We shall see how it looks! Thanks so much! I'm pretty sure Bare would have to swat at the giraffe a few times to make sure it wasn't there to steal his food lol!

I found this guy a while ago that I was hoping to find in white and use for a hand towel holder or use in the kitchen somehow. I would love to find someone talented enough to paint white parts on it to match my sweet Beacon.

@Lynn Lou am loving the blue bathroom. I redid my powder room in a Schumacher wallpaper, it was a journey and from the sounds of it I've had similar conversations with my hubby about the house not being a museum. ;-) Argh I notice everything; they even tore the Schumacher wallpaper during install then tried to hide it. Sure it's in a place that no one will likely look, BUT...I know it's there. The towel holders are super fun, love the giraffe.

@Dawn Martinez Thanks!! I'm so excited about this bathroom lol! Funny how husbands are like that. He has said that more than once with the powder room and kitchen project (and our master bath last year). Oh no....tore the WC and tried to hide it?!?! I know I would definitely notice it too! I notice everything. Drives my husband crazy. He touched up some paint in the laundry room the other night. I just went in there tonight and was like, I guess these other areas don't need to be touched up?! To his defense, the lighting was different when he painted in there. It's hard to catch everything in different lighting.

I really love that giraffe too! He would be super cool and totally unexpected in a powder room. I may have to order him and see how he looks :)

@Red Ryder and @Lynn Lou I live in one of those developments from the 1970s where there are the same homes repeated backwards and forwards through the area. Lots of people have the same house plan. I love to cruise Zillow to look for the same house plan and see what THOSE owners did with the same spaces I have. I put our house plans on there and, now am reminded, I need to update them and the photos of the "new" rooms. My neighbors on our street with the same houses all are looking forward to seeing the new spaces. Reminder: I switched our powder room and laundry room to a laundry closet then 3/4 bath. The wind was just right so I could hear one set of neighbors from across the street afterwards saying how much better they thought the function would be of switching. None of us with that plan liked where the powder room was. The plan has good features though, so worth it overall. Anyway, you bet everyone gets a tour!

@K L Thanks again for posting those towel holders. I had looked before but never saw the ones with marble base. Crazy that I ordered it last night and it arrived today. It matches perfectly with the counter! Now I just need to find hand towels lol! It is kind of big so I'll have to see how it look with a towel.

Finally got the mirror and artwork installed! So happy with how it all turned out. Still waiting on hand towels to arrive. And we still need to patch and touch up paint, but happy that it’s about done. Don’t know if I need anything above the toilet. I’m thinking not?

See, if everyone thought about the fact that they can't get away from white in a bathroom very easily, I think we'd see a lot more bold-colored bathrooms. I just love the view from the doorway!

Great little soap dispenser! What are those sticks by the toilet? What choice of a trash can? Do you plan on a cup dispenser? Or do people need to go to the kitchen for that? Seriously, I like how clean your vanity top is...less clutter.

It looks GREAT! Nothing else needed over the toilet. The artwork and irritating are perfect. Nothing over the toilet needed.

The blue is just right. I hope you love this room and bring everyone to see it!
