Any ideas how to adjust height on shower curtain rod ?

Hi All, we all know many shower curtain rods sold at the stores are adjustable on the length(like tension rods). But once the rod is installed and curtain/liner are hung, what if I want to hang a curtain/liner of a different length without needing to take the rod down and put it back on again ? Such a hassle for me ! Any ideas how to do it in a way that once the rod is installed its vertical height can be easily adjusted without taking it down ? Thanks.

Get a tension rod.

@anj_p Thanks. Unfortunately that's the issue I was trying to explain in my original post. The rod can't adjust height once it's on without taking it down.

The height of a shower rod relative to the position of a tub is largely a matter of use and desired effect. Some shower curtains extend almost entirely to the floor while others drop just below the rim of an attractive claw foot tub. What is certain is the shower curtain liner needs to hang down into the tub below its rim so water does not splash onto the floor. Hanging a Shower Rod Shower curtains are commonly 6 feet in length from top to bottom. They are made longer as well. For custom bathtub designs, their length can vary greatly. If you are installing the shower rod anew and need to know where to hang it, the first thing to do is measure the length of the liner. If it is 6 feet long, figure that it should hang below the rim of the tub at least 5 inches. That means the rod should be placed 5 feet 7 inches from the top of the tub. However, consider the difference between the rod placement and where the liner attaches to the curtain rings. If the liner dangles 2 inches below the rod, you can add that to the height of the rod, placing it 5 feet 9 inches above the tub. The curtain also requires some consideration. It should not drag along the floor; rather, it should be at least 2 inches above it when hanging. If you want to showcase a claw foot tub, hang the curtain just a few inches below the rim of the tub. We measured the height of the rod in our old hall bathroom before gutting the room so we could try to avoid mounting it as high as that one (that one was 81 1/4" from the floor). I didn't like that a lot of the tub showed below the curtain. Also, the liner didn't hang low enough inside the tub to prevent it from blowing in while showering. We purchased a cheap tension rod at HD the other night because we had to hang something up quickly--I wanted to be able to use the shower yesterday . Will probably try moving it up a bit because it looks a little low for the space (and the liner hangs very low in the tub). Once we determine a good position (that'll take a few go rounds of re-positioning I'm sure!), we can then mark the tile for mounting the permanent rod. Thanks for the advice Sheila (your baths look very nice, BTW!). We're open to more suggestions from the GW gang as well...

Unfortunately, the french doors don't have enough of a "lip" to mount anything inside the actual door. Hence my idea to put the rod just above, even grazing the top of the door frame/molding. The rod for the panels is mounted wide, and the panels are pulled open 90% of the time, so you'd never see the white rod where it extends past the doors. I wish I could photoshop something but it'd probably be faster to mount the rod in real life than for me to photoshop something!!

You can go anywhere from slightly over the frame to the bottom of the soffit, but the main thing is that if you are going to do drapes either operable or fixed panels they have to be hung on a wide enough rod that they completely clear the doors when they are pulled open and the doors are fully operable.

Get a plastic curtain liner for $2.99 and cut it to length. Replace it every 2 months or as necessary.

@emilyam819 Thanks. The issue is I bought the same liners from the same company but they came in a bit short, meaning the company didn't make them exactly the same length. If things come in longer I can cut but if they come in shorter then a problem. Thoughts ?

@Molly Thanks. I only have a liner no curtain. The question is how to make the rod adjustable on the "vertical height" without taking it down and putting it back on, independent of a liner and/or curtain.

I’ve never seen a vertical adjustment bar. I’d try different ring sizes to get the length you need.

No there is not. Frankly I've found the tension rods to be sooo nice vs the old school metal cups that held the rods for this very reason. Tension rods are easily moved.

I am having a bit of difficulty understanding the problem because shower curtains and liners come in a standard length. If your liner is too short then the permanent solution is to move the bar once and for all. If you don't want to do that then put a regular cloth shower curtain on the permanent rod and a liner inside of that on a tension rod.

I had a similar problem. I hung my fabric curtain from the ceiling. My liner was hung from the same bar so I needed a way to lower it. At the time, I couldn't find an extra-long liner in the color I wanted. I used a chain instead of a hook. The difference in my situation is that I did not hang it from a traditional bar. I hung it from this attached to the ceiling. Since it sounds like you have a bar, you might need to attach the chain to the shower curtain hooks that are attached to the bar.

I don't think this will be visually appealing but it will get the job done. OTOH, liners are cheap. By the time you pay for the fix in purchasing the chain, you could have just bought another liner the correct length.

The suggestion to lengthen the shower hooks is a great one.
