I have a Pony Tail Palm that I use to bring in during the winter. Last winter I left the potted palm outside. We had a very cold long winter. I placed the palm on the west side of the house under oak trees. Then this spring, I moved the plant to the East side in full sun. I thought this plant was dead. It had no leaves and the trunk which is about 3ft tall seemed lifeless. I felt that possibly the plant had frozen during the hard winter. I repotted in a larger pot, and watered it thourghly, at first every other day for about a week. Then to my supprise, little green shoots began to appear around the main trunk 3/4 way up the ball. I had not seen this before. Now that I have learned much about this plant, I want to plant outdoors. The plant survived the winter, but the main trunk no longer has palms. I think I will keep it potted, and move it again this winter to a sheltered area and out of the Northeastern wind. I think this plant may be aclemated enough to leave it outdoors. In the Florida Panhandle, we are the coldest city in the state during winter, and the hotest city in the state during summer.

My PTP is 14 years old and up until 3 years ago had a single 'tail' at the top which started to rot and die off. I decided to leave it alone. When the top returned to health we named it Cousin It. Now it has about 8 large 'babies at its base that are strong and lush. At Christmastime I put a santa hat on 'It' and two large comical eyes.

I would have to say that it's not getting sufficient lighting. When this happens, any new leaf growth will grow limp and be pale green in color. Ponytails love as much sunlight as you can give them during the growing months. But when I bring my ponytails back inside for the winter, they can tolerate being in shadier locations. Also, during the winter months, I keep my ponytails on the dry side. This prevents them from putting out any new growth until springtime. Unfortunately, this new growth will still remain limp, even in brighter light. But any new growth will grow out perky and erect, with the graceful curves in their leaves. I would scale back on watering your ponytail, to slow down the rate of new growth. Then once Spring arrives, I would place it in direct sunlight [if possible] and begin watering it normally again. When mine are brought back indoors for the winter, they sit on this table with no direct sunlight whatsoever, receiving only whatever light that my bedroom receives during the daytime. I keep it more on the dry side, almost forgetting to water it sometimes. It does perfectly fine. Then, once the weather warms up and I move it back outdoors, I water it more often at its normal rate.
