Baby, it's cold outside
Comments (7)I have a large leaf pile (30X8), and without thinking I dismantled it ahead of the cold wave (I want to do something in the cold season, plus the large bags of compost could be efficiently dragged through the snow). That bare ground got frozen down to -1F. I want to see if I have whacked something like squash vine borer, that was the deepest litter they can find in at least a square mile. It could be an IPM method. BTW, today is the ugliest 46F day ever. It has been called a snow day here, after the mixed stuff that fell overnight froze on contacting the frozen roads. it is also foggy, with a persistent drizzle and 400yds visibility. 60F tomorrow, and we will break records. it is still a much warmer than average winter....See MoreBaby, it's cold outside...
Comments (15)Klea, knock on wood I am not having any back problems to speak of yet!!!! I'm 5ft 9 inches tall and weigh in at a whopping 165 lbs (SKINNY) and I turned 45 on the 19th of June so i'm still fairly young and healthy (other than being diabetic). So for me moving the hoyas back inside is a JOB (usually takes about 3 days)but I love my hoyas so I don't really mind doing it. The hardest part is getting and keeping each plant unwound from around it's neighbor!!!! I am outside working with the hoyas almost every single day and at least once a week I try to unwind vines to keep everyone to themself. I do this even in the gh during the winter also as some of the hoyas continue to grow throughout the cold season. My gh is 18ft wide X 10ft high X 56ft long I could have gone the extra 4 ft and made it a full 60ft but there's a grape arbor behind it and I wanted to leave enough room for me to walk between the two and be able to mow grass....See MoreBaby It's Cold Outside

Comments (6)If someone wants a metric for the "mildness of summers" one can use the "heat zone". See http://ahsgardening.org/gardening-resources/gardening-maps/heat-zone-map If you don't want to buy the map from AHS, just blow up the image there, or go here http://solanomg.ucanr.edu/files/245158.pdf That's a rating of the number of days every year with the temperature over 86F. But one might really like a "scorch map", which would be the number of days over, say, 100F. Wonder if there is something like that....See Moreplllog
