Design Dilemma Windows Woodworking

Window and Door casing size

I wanted to get some opinions on the casing ive decided to go with for window and doors.

The house is a raised ranch 8ft ceilings and double hung windows.
I decided to get 2-1/2 x 3/4 door casing and the same profile for window casing but in 3-1/2 x 1-1/16.

Reasoning for smaller door casing is that a few areas would need have the trim ripped to size and fit and some of the trim may touch other doors or be very close.

What does everyone think? Will this look ok? It will primarily be in the bedrooms.

Keep all casing the same dimension. What type of base are you using? What style doors? Trim getting painted? Doors and windows painted or stained? What does the interior of the home look like (inspo pics)?

With that size doors, I'd definitely choose the wider casings. All our interior doors are only 32" wide and we are useing 6'8" doors with transoms downstairs (10ft ceilings) and 7'0 doors upstairs (9 ft ceilings). Frankly even with our doors I really wanted to use 4 1/2 inch trim. We wound up going with 3 1/2 inch instead but only b/c DH wanted stained woodwork and the cost of the 4 1/2 inch width in stain quality stretched the budget just a little too far. (We're trimming all the windows as well as the doors.) I think it'll be okay on our doors and windows but still wish we could have afforded the 4 1/2" trim. I think it would have looked so much nicer. With your wider taller doors and higher ceilings, I really think 3 1/2" trim will look skimpy. JMHO.

ours are about a healthy 1/4", and about a 1/2" deeper. but we have 2 different sizes...larger ones in the window corners and smaller as moldding filler...we decided to use them and the corner blocks rather than making all the miter cuts.

In our last house we had windows/doors with flat casings and a simple backband and we plan to do the same thing in our new build. That house was 8' ceilings and I believe the flat stock was 4" + the backband but I'll ask my DH - he'll know since he made it. It was painted white and to my eye straddled the line between a traditional and a more clean lined look. In the new house it will be scaled for 9' ceilings and a vaulted LR but I don't know what those dimensions will be yet. If you're interested I'll see if I can find a picture where the casing shows well. Are you planning stained or painted trim?

Really moving boxes is really not a huge issue even with the added expense of patching drywall, IMO the wider trim should be on the mainfloor and if anything the narrow upstairs so I would stick to my guns and have it done properly or just warn hubby this will be an ongoing argument for ever.

Here is the base and crown i will be using. The doors are 2 panel raised. All trim and doors will be painted white.

nothing wrong with trim touching other trim.

I like your millwork option.

any good finish carpenter can trim doors and windows to look beautiful... often it IS the trim that makes the space. I vote for bigger rather than smaller.

Im just personally not a fan trim touching. Thats why i opted for the 2-1/2 for the doors. I thought the bigger casing around the window in the profile would look nice and pop with the picture frame style and inside mount cellular shades.
