Yes you need a minimum of 36" for prepping between the sink and the cooktop. This layout truly needs help.

@cpartist you’re right, that is why I am asking. I’ve only got 32” and 27” on each side. Do you have any suggestions?

Is the second photo taken from your front door?

What are the dimensions of the space youll be dedicating to dining area? just want to make sure that space is adequate as many people are tempted to compromise it.

@sheloveslayouts Photo is taken from the corner of living room next to the fireplace. Front door is behind the wall with the hanging plant in the left. Dining room today is 11x14, we can leave it as is or make it bigger or smaller and scale the kitchen accordingly. In the plan above its 6” larger.

A sketch of how these spaces work together would help undersyand a bit better. is your back yard access off the dining area to the left of the fireplace?

The door to the deck is currently in the kitchen but it results in a huge waste of space, so moving it to the right side of the kitchen would allow us to utilize this area:

Oh!! Here in the PNW thats a split level not a ranch. Got it.

@sheloveslayouts I was reading up on that and half the people said it wasnt a true split level because it its just a split foyer, and the levels themselves aren’t split (or is that a tri level?). I also saw it called a raised ranch by some.

Suggest you re-arrange the perimeter: Fridge to the right of sink. Range on left wall. Pantry remain where it is. You'll wind up with a flow similar to ours:

Yes, your sink and stove are too close together. And the basic workflow in a kitchen is from fridge/pantry to sink to stove, which means your stove and sink would work better if they were flipped. But that means moving the window, which you don't want to do. The image above also shows a layout which would work, but it also entails moving/enlarging the window. Sliding your stove closer to the corner, perhaps centered on the aisle opposite, allows you to keep the sink and window where they are but doesn't address the workflow issue.

Agree with course411 suggestion to move the fridge around to the right and place the range on the side wall, and maybe make the pantry a little smaller. You will have more useable counter space on the perimeter that way. I would also take another look at the cabinets both for aesthetic and functional reasons. Aesthetic, I think the 3 narrow cabinet doors on the current fridge wall look odd, 2 wider ones are better. I'd eliminate the pull outs by the range for functional reasons, and get wider drawer banks instead. You could void the corner space (instead of I'm assuming a corner susan) and get two sets of decent size drawers instead, also like course's layout.

@rebasheba great idea about voiding the corner cabinet- I had heard that doing so was a waste of space, but you’re right about two drawers looking better and are likely more functional. I’ve never had a susan before so I’m not sure how useful it is.

@course411 I would definitely do that if I had a wall like that layout does! Maybe I should add one in, the fridge without one would be right in the middle of the kitchen and dining room instead of tucked away at the back.
