I wish you had posted this about 2wks ago because I put boxes of frames out for trash day :-( We are putting our house up for sale and I had to rid myself of all my trash to treasure unfinished projects to get the house ready to show. Bummer I know! I had a few folks pick up some things, but lots I saw crushed in the trash truck. I was soooooo sad I had to lose all my collected treasures. Anywho, just wanted to let you know where I shop, other than the side of the road. There is a thrift store on Auroa Road called C.I.T.A ( Christ is the Answer) and also the 2nd store on US 1. The stores help the homeless in the area and the larger store on US 1 houses and feeds these folks. All the items for the stores are donated and you can't beat the prices. Goodwill and SA here are way too pricey! Anyway hope you find lots of frames and wish I could offer ideas for your display. Mary Ann

To follow up on this, I ended up going with silver/shiny hardware and it turned out FANTASTIC - I've included a picture for context. I had a bunch of false starts including hardware that was too delicate - I must have tried everything. The hardware I ended up using was from Lowe's (chunkier for the bottom cabinets and hidden dishwasher and a bit lighter for the uppers, NOT matching but close enough that it works - I tried knobs instead of pulls on the uppers and it just didn't work for me functionally, and I thought they looked ugly). This is what I ended up with after trying hardware from Lowe's, Home Depot, Gracious Home, IKEA and probably a store or two I'm not thinking of. Lots of purchases and returns (almost all unopened items but still). The hardware now is one of my favorite parts of the kitchen.

In my last home I did my powder room with an English library sort of 'vibe'. The walls were a deep red(Balmoral Red/Ralph Lauren),and I used pictures, small mirrors, corbels, plates, etc. from ceiling to baseboard. All frames were very ornate and were either gold or black/ gold. If you have a standard builders grade mirror, get rid of it or add a heafty frame, which is what I did, or remove the mirror and use a decorative hanging mirror, not necessarily intended for a bathroom. I also hung a small narrow shelf directly in front of 'the loo' which held small vintage books, since I thought it would add to that English library look I was going for. When I put the home on the market to sell, instead of a negative, it was a hit! I did leave the little shelf since the new owner wanted to re-create the look.

May I assume that when you write "linens" you mean "textiles"? Here's a photo of some of mine as mounted on wall. (You can click on it to see a larger image.) The oldest, the small rondelles, are Coptics that date back to the 3rd or 4th century C.E. as well as some from South America and the Middle East that are as recent as the 18th, but that's beside the point. These have all been framed under glass. Each is mounted on Linen which in turn is stretched over acid-free foam core board and taped onto the back side of the board. The glass is separated from the surface of the fabric by a 1/4 inch plastic spacer around the edges of the frame, practically invisible beneath even these very narrow metal frames. You may or may not need or even consider going to these extremes, but I am surprised that no one has thought to warn you against three things: first, allowing the textile to touch wood or cardboard or any backing that is not acid-free. The presence of any acidic backing is, over time, going to discolor and/or ultimately destroy your textile. Second, if you choose to cover your textile with a sheet of glass or plastic to protect it from dust or smoke or other airborne particles, the glass must not touch the textile because moisture may condense on the inside surface of the glass as a result of temperature and humidity conditions. And, third, although it doesn't apply to what I have shown but does apply to what you have described, is folding. Folding any fabric, over time is going to weaken the threads at the fold line and, again over time, the part of the fabric that is exposed to light will fade in relation to that part of the fabric that is not. Granted, these are museum-level concerns, but each is worthy of your consideration depending primarily on the value (not in terms of dollars) to you of the pieces that you have collected. I have admired pieces of fabric that have been attached to a sunlit wall with thumbtacks, leaving a rusty little circle on each corner, but I'd much prefer to find one that's be languishing in an attic trunk for the last hundred years, perhaps brought out only to show the children what their great-grandmother sewed or what faraway country she had visited, or perhaps even had come from.
