Can't decide on soil - please help!
Comments (17)This has been a huge problem for me as well. I can't take the advice to just "use what's here" - our urban property, when we bought it, is cemented over. Short of breaking up the cement, we have to buy soil for our beds. This is what I did this year - I purchased a mix from a landscape supply company that sells in bulk. It was supposedly an ideal mix for raised beds - compost, peat moss, and the ubiquitous pine bark, which I figured was ok (and a friend at a garden center recommended it as an amendment anyway so I figured it was ok). It sounded close to Mel's mix, with pine bark instead of vermiculite. The results have been disastrous! Nothing is growing. Trying to navigate all the bad advise and false advertising with limited experience has been demoralizing. If I go to Home Depot and look at the soil available in bags, it is almost all Scott's or Miracle Grow fertilized mixes. I don't know a whole lot about soil but I would like to build healthy, living soil that can support beneficial organisms. Organic soil at the garden center is $18.00 for a two cubic foot bag. We have decided to dump out one of the beds and try to salvage some tomato plants this year. The alternative is to watch everything die. I hate the idea of buying Miracle Gro soil mixes, but I am in the city and I don't see a lot of alternatives. Bulk soil didn't work out, garden center stuff is WAY too expensive, and Home Depot only wants to sell me better living through chemistry. Is there some sort of conspiracy against home vegetable gardeners? It feels like it....See MoreWhat should I put above couch
Comments (12)Get a cabinet for the TV when you just said I have too much furniture? My main purpose in my house is hosting groups of people, we constantly have people over so if I have to choose between more seating and a cabinet, seating wins, every time. The rattan chair was given to us for free, I don' like it but it adds seating so it stays. And finally, everyone chooses which battles they are going to fight with their kids, for me I would rather go through the trouble of hanging my stuff a little higher and avoid them making it fall and hurt them and focus on other lessons that are more important right now. Honestly, you'e comment was the most unhelpful I have ever received here but it makes me never want to ask for advise from here again. Interior design is different for everyone because every one has different priorities and needs and if you're going to give advice to someone of their design, make sure you are trying to serve them accordingly, and if you can't then just refrain from saying any comment at all because at that point you are only serving yourself...See MoreCan't decide on windows for new construction. Please help!
Comments (16)I agree wholeheartedly with the concept of not skimping on windows, however the specific recommendation of that builder may be a little misguided IMO. We replace Pella's in age range of 10 years +/- on a regular basis for one. Secondly, vinyl is not a bad choice based on performance or durability. In fact, a high end vinyl product would be an excellent choice in that regard as thermal and structural performance ratings would indicate, HOWEVER, that just may not fit the look that you are going for with all of the wood in the home. I'd suggest something with a stainable interior to keep the theme. The Marvin Integrity with wood interior would be a nice choice, in fact I think that would be a really good fit. It's one of the more durable products on the market with a real wood interior. The Provia Aeris would be worth consideration as well. Both windows are primarily constructed of fiberglass and vinyl respectively, with a wood veneer (actual wood 1/4 to 1/2", not contact paper) on the interior side. Both would typically be priced more reasonably than that Designer series and by a fair margin. Lastly, I believe that triple pane is well worth the cost in colder climates as well. Definitely worthy consideration if the product that you choose has it available....See MorePlease help. Dinning room project I can't decide on
Comments (23)Thanks for all the input and design ideas. I am almost sure on the dining chairs from west elm. https://www.westelm.com/products/finley-high-back-dining-chair-h2914/?pkey=ccontract-grade-furniture%7Ccontract-grade-dining-furniture&isx=0.0.2975 I will be going again in morning to checkout the upholstery colors and try them out to make sure they are comfortable. No kids in the house, only adults, so not worried about food on the carpet. I will rethink this rug placement. I also like the idea of plating some evergreens in front of the fence, so i have a nicer view out those windows. I will update everyone tomorrow once i come back from west elm with the final dining chair decision. This table is 108 inches long. I think 8 chairs should look perfect with it. 10 might be pushing it?...See MoreCarol H
