Homeowner insurance information

We recently had a major flood due to a plumbing leak caused by a plumber recommended by our contractor during the remodeling of three bathrooms in our home. Much to my surprise, our homeowner insurance immediately denied the claim. Apparently, written into most policies, they will not cover poor workmanship. We had to go after the plumbers insurance policy. These are a few of the caveats you should be aware of. Third party insurance does not replace item for item. They depreciate everything. Secondly, if you decide to get an attorney involved, attorney fees are NOT recovered if you win. They are if you go after your homeowner policy! Most importantly, find a reputable public adjuster. Ours got us significantly more than we would have gotten on our own. Lastly, if you discover a leak, tend to it quickly. If you let it go a while, no insurance will likely cover it.
