help! I need window shade advice!
We recently moved into a home built in 2005 that has these large, beautiful windows in the family room. First thing I did when we moved in was take off the outdated treatments that had been hanging since the house was built. However, now the sun beats in on my new leather chairs and rug. I’d love to put either Roman shades or roller shades. My questions are, which would you do and where would you place them? The previous shades hung after the top tier of windows.

Comments (3)First, get rid of the ivy - it is considered a noxious weed in OR (and most other places in the PNW as well) and it is a habitat for rodents. Same with any English holly. Deer will graze various plants with thorns so that is not exactly a guarantee and rugosa roses need sun. Various evergreen shrubs should work for you - a spreading yew, sweet box (Sarcococca species), Pieris japonica and native huckleberries (they'll eat the berries but leave the plants alone) are all relatively deer resistant, however young animals will invariably sample anything and even the adults will test out things new to the garden to see if they are tasty or not so it is best to protect initially. You can also try underplanting with hellebores - completely deer proof - and hardy geraniums like maculatum or macrorrhizum which apparently haver an unpleasant taste. If your property is regularly traveled by deer - and most of us in the PNW experience their visits to some degree or another - try planting so that you leave pathways to prevent trampling of young plants....See MoreNeed help deciding window treatments - shutters or bamboo shades!

Comments (5)Such a nice space. What are your needs? Are the window treatments strictly decorative? Do you need to protect furniture and rugs from the sun? Do you need privacy? I think you can use different treatments to differentiate rooms but I do think plantation shutters look best when they are used through the whole house. They have a lot of visual weight and I think it helps to make the room look balanced when they are used on all the windows. And since I am OCD, I also like to consider how my window treatments will look when facing the front of the house. I wouldn't worry about curtain panels just yet. You'll be adding rugs, furniture and art which will add different textures to the room. Comments (2)Unfortunately there are not really options that offer the versatility of vertical blinds, without that not-so-great look. I prefer curtains over any type of shade since they can be opened and closed in a second. A "solar shade" could also be a good option, as when they are closed, they still allow a tough of light to enter the room, and don't 100% block the view. Hope that helps!...See MoreKate

last yearTo soften the light further, you could hang sheers that would not obstruct the view. They also come in beautiful patterns if you wish. Hang them to the ceiling and to the soffits.

last yearlast modified: last yearAs a professional, I would not do a a roman shade. Roman shades need to be ”dressed” and with the height of those windows that would be really difficult. You could do a motorized roller shade, motorized natural woven shades or a beautiful sheer drapery panel. Hope that helps.

last yearI’ve been looking at the woven shades all day and love the look. Where do you think they should be placed though? Blue line, or across the red line, with some sort of shelf to help it go across the opening? I’ve had different professionals tell me different things and now I’m even more confused!!
