Think KIS......Keep It Simple! I have a 80 plus old FIL who lives by himself. The most important thing to him about his surroundings has been to have things out where he can get to them and to have them easy to use. This has meant finding the easiest microwave on the planet for him to use, no more than two buttons. Phones with large numbers and a phone sheet that has pics on it as well as names so he can find who he's calling easily.......one of the great grand kids made that for him, lamps that are easy to turn on and off and a tv big enough for him to see clearly with his bad eyesight, oh and HIS chair. Apparently as you age getting in an out of a chair is hard, so finding a good comfortable chair that is also easy to get out of is VERY IMPORTANT. We just had his bathroom redone with a toilet that was higher than his old one, so he could get up and down easier. There is only one area rug in the whole house. In the bathroom for when he steps out of the shower and it has a no slip grip on the back and is very easy to wash and dry. I see in your bath it has a shower curtain....if it is at all possible I'd replace the rod with one of the newer hotel types that bow out. That extra space it creates in the shower is a real plus for seniors. Be careful on bed heights too. They need to be able to get out of bed easily. Given how drab the basic apartment is I'd go for colorful things to cheer it up BUT only after the basic needs of function are meant. It's more important at 80 something that things function well and easily than it is that they be pretty. You also need to take into account what she already has. You maybe surprised at what she won't part with because it has an emotional tie to her past.

Mongo, Tundra, Thanks to the both of you. Part of my concern was how to accomplish the slope with concrete. I'll be blunt, my concrete skills suck and pouring a sloped pad was likely to be well outside my skills range. Tundra, thanks for the pictures, they clarified a great deal. It's true that a picture is worth a thousand words because I don't know how you could describe what you did without at least some drawings but the pictures tell the tale just fine. Above is a piss poor rough drawing of the floor plan of my bathroom. As you can see my intention is to install the drain at the far side of the shower enclosure. My wife has requested that she be able to spray down the whole bathroom with a hose. I'm guessing that to allow for that would make the bathroom "wet"?? My current working thought is to pour the pad in two stages. The first would be about 2 to 2-1/2" below the existing grade. The other would be 2" below that. The demarcation like would be the beginning of the shower enclosure area. The purpose of pouring it so low is so that I could use deck mud to create a dual slope from the edges to center and from right to left (as seen from diagram). I was thinking 1/8" per linear foot of drop for the primary bathroom area and somewhere in the range of 1/4-1/2" drop for the shower proper. I would mud out the preliminary slope with it all rolling into the weep holes of the drain assembly. I would then membrane the whole thing. I'd membrane the walls in the primary bath area up to the 4' mark since that's how high my tile is going to go. I'd membrane the shower area all the way to the ceiling since that's how high the tile will go in there. On top of the membrane I'm planning to make a final deck mud slope that I would then thinset the tile to. I'm using 3/4" pennyround mosaic for the floor and ceiling so adjusting to the slope won't be an issue. As I said, that's the current mental formulation, pending feedback and ideas. As with all battle plans it's not likely to survive contact with the enemy. Mongo, don't fret about rambling. As you might have noticed I'm a bit on the verbose end of things myself. Get that nasty hacked up molding ridiculousness off of that mirror. And either gut the whole bath to the studs and start over. Or, do nothing, other than actual proper job on mirror replacement, and put in a real ceiling instead of that other hack. The hack work is really bringing it down. The #1 rule if design is to First Do No Harm. You've repeatedly violated that. And that is what needs to be removed and corrected.

Hense why I am asking for advice on lay out. Not dimensions, not structural, not electrical, not plumbing. Just a simple layout. I got this. Well once again you're showing that you don't have an understanding of what it takes to remodel a house or build new. Why do I say that? Because you can't just move rooms willy nilly without having dimensions, without knowing where structural walls are, where plumbing and electrical are currently and whether any of that can be moved for a reasonable price. Everything you mentioned affects one another. And one of the biggest is room dimensions as I mentioned in my post above. So you drew a closet that was only 4'2" wide and you wanted to put clothing in it. The fact that it's too small affects any rooms near it because it all need to be adjusted. I'm sorry but no, you don't have it. You need help from an architect or person of design talent but as becky implied, you're grasping at straws hoping someone will come up with something that will work. Additionally have you already purchased this house?
