Okay this helps. Here's what I found from an Aggrand dealer. You cannot find a more potent combination of hydrolyzed fish extracts, kelp, bloodmeal, sulfate of potash and other proprietary ingredients than we have in this product line. A single quart is versatile enough to treat 1500 to 8000 square feet of soil or when used as a foliar spray on your vegetables, flowers, lawns, shrubs, trees, houseplants and field crops. I am troubled by the potassium sulfate from the beginning, but it really bothers me when there are proprietary ingredients in a product like this. Is it arsenic or milk? We can't know. Next, we now have a way to figure the cost. If you can buy a quart for $8.90 and apply a quart per 1,500 to 8,000 square feet, that amounts to a cost range from $1.11 to $5.93 per thousand square feet. If you apply 4 to 6 times per year, the annual cost ranges from a minimum of $4.45 to $35.60 per thousand square feet. My annual cost or five apps of corn meal is $10.00 per 1,000. So by these simple calcs the costs seem to be in line with what we're already doing with ground grains. You could spend less with grains or more. Most of us are aware of how the grain type fertilizers work. Here are a few things I think I know about liquids (foliar sprays and soil drenches). Organic foliar sprays feed the bacteria and fungi that live on the exposed surfaces of the plant. The soil drench technique will spray both the leaf surfaces and the soil where the ingredients will feed the soil microbes. Some foliar sprays are so effective at feeding the plant that a secondary result is the withering of the roots. The only thing left is for some people to use it and write in about it.

Dear All, I have made a calculator which ncludes the marauder (thenk you!) section. I have made it so all variables can be changed so you can create scenarios. It is essentiall y for commercial vermicomposting but the home composter can still work out the numbers by entering the purchase quantity on a date and then at one point sorting the worms into a total group and weighing them. 1 gram (sorry I don't use ounces) is good for the average red wiggler but you will have to take an average if you use night crawlers as they are bigger, etc. You can then determine how many you have as a total mixed. This will give you an idea for modifying the variables and this will give you a very close figure. If you purchase more worms later i have included a column for that entry. If you want to sell vermicompost then add in your selling price and the percentage return you expect i.ie. 1 kg waste = 50% VC. You will then see if you can make a profit or loss. I have also included start up costs and running costs which will affect the profit margin. Start up costs are spread over 10 months. It does work.

Since two people (at least) reacted negatively, I probably should have included both the punchline and a smiley for those who don't get my sometimes dry humor. Sorry if it seems like I was flipping anyone off. I tried to show examples of sales tax being due and collected collected when one might think it would not, as well as the other way around .. so I was really only trying to make the point about generalizations being dangerous and often inaccurate. FWIW, I believe that MT and OR are not the only states with no sales tax... I think NH an DE (and AK) similarly have no sales tax. I don't know if local jurisdictions impose a tax or not, nor do I know anything about whether the jurisdictions in any of these 5 states impose a use tax on out-of-state purchases that are brought into the state. Obviously, a person living in these states have a different set of concerns than persons who live in other states. It's also true that some states have (like NY) have what I think they call "safe harbor provisions" on their tax returns. With these, you can voluntarily pay the state essentially an "estimated" use tax based on your AGI. These may not cover everything -- in NY I think it only applies to purchases under $1k. YMMV, of course .. .and I'm not a lawyer, CPA, or employee of the Tax department. The real point I was trying to make is that folks should 'never say never' or 'never say always' when it comes to these kinds of topics, since the laws vary dramatically from state to state. Finally, re: local vs. "internet" purchases -- Weissman is correct that depending on the individual (and the manufacturer), after sales service may or may not be a consideration. The macroeconomic arguments for or against local vs long-distance purchases are interesting. The conclusion is not obvious (to me, anyhow). The impact on the local economy is more obvious. This should be an incentive for "local" vendors to provide well-trained sales folks and competitive pricing.
