Help!! Help us tie this busy bathroom together

last year

our counter top for our vanity was installed today and it was supposed to be more black colored and came more in the brown shades family. we were going with a black and white color scheme with pops of brown but not this much. help me tie it together. obviously shower isn't finished and no walls are painted. shiplap will be behind vanity and not sure what to do behind free standing tub yet.

This is a visual cacaphony -- for something to star, other things have to be more background. Not sure how we can "pull it together" after the fact... sorry,

Yeah. The shower is the star and everything else should be plain. Even the walls - no shiplap. Flat wall finish, very low-key, pale paint. Plain tile floors in a low-key, pale color.

You are brave, I could never let someone tile anything, unless I was able to check the layout daily! I hate the look of 1/3 offset, so I prefer to go with stacked when there is no other choice. I find the repeating stair-step pattern busy and prefer the straight simpler lines of the stacked pattern. You need someone to do a scale drawing of the layout to get a feel for how the patterns will work. Next best thing is if the tile installer will prop some tiles up in the different patterns and take some photos for you. Match the grout to each tile color. Good luck!

Hi all, we are mostly finished with this and I thought I would post finished pics since many of you gave me advice. We decided not to paint the cabinets in the bathroom after all, and I think it's perfectly nice (if a bit boring.) It's better in person than in pictures for some reason. We also color blocked the walls and I think it's pretty nice although probably not everyone's taste.

Sativa has a good idea for a high contrast design but I might be overwhelmed too much dark black. It would need the balance of lighter floors and the natural light from the windows which could make it stunning. I bought the same pebble tile at our local H H Restore to re do our tiny shower. I want bright white tile like your subway tile but hubby still wants a large format porcelain. The mix from the pebbles can work with many things. Remember when it is sealed the colors will deepen to what it looks like wet. You could use a midtone like the charcoal grout for your floor tile if you are keeping the walls lighter like a warm white, tape or grey from the pebbles. If you go with dramatic black walls, you need a lighter grey ,taupe or warm white for balance. With either color scheme choose a basic floor tile with a bit of texture to prevent falls. A rectified porcelain with touches both cool grey and warm whites and taupes would work with lots color schemes. Keep in mind you may change your style in a few years. So pick a classic with lots of options. It will be easier to change a dramatic paint color than a busy tile pattern.

Patterns are a little limited, but I love the eco friendly cotton rugs at Hook and Loom. I have this one in taupe/white in my master bathroom. So easy. Washer/dryer - perfect. I lay back down very slightly damp so its always totally flat. It's certainly solved the issue of spray products buildup on the floor ;0)

When i put in my bathroom, i picked oit the floor, shower tile and counters separately. i liked all of them, but when put together its a mess. Im still stuck with it 10 years later.

That looks like what you did. The brown in the counter isnt the main problem, its the 3 different bold patterns. Those materials arent going to look like they go together. If they have to stay for budget, remove the shiplap and put up a solid white shower curtain to hide the shower tile.

It's not the colors that are fighting each other, it's the patterns and styles...you've got cement tiles and shiplap leaning modern farmhouse paired with modern, high drama counters and shower tiles. The shiplap will be easiest to remove and just have plain painted sheetrock. It's too late to do anything about the shower tile since that impacts the waterproofing, but you might have been able to blend the counter and the floor if that shower tile was a plain white. If you're doing a shower enclosure, see if frosted glass is an option so that the shower tile is not such a focal point. Do nothing around the FS tub-just plain sheetrock and pick very plain light fixtures, hardware and faucets.

I hate to pile on, but it truly comes across as someone shopped the bargain bin and couldn't find enough of one material to do the whole bath, so you ended up with 4 different patterns.

The 2 items that complement each other are the vanity and counters.

yeah, I hate to say it, but the countertop should be a solid white or black.

You have so many lines going on! The shiplap too.

similar patterns. the floor and shower tile are very busy. the countertop is pretty neutral

The shower tile and floor tile is fine. but you need a solid white countertop. (or black)

Replacing the countertop is the easiest option. get it off before that adhesive sets and sell it. someone will buy it.

Replace the countertop with a solid color and get rid of the ship lap.

I know it's exciting to find lots of patterns you like, but the idea is to pare it down. The shower is the star.

If it were me, I'd also change out the floor to a solid black or white.

ripping out tile is the most expensive option. you could buy a whole new vanity w/a new top for what redoing the shower would cost. (and prob still have money leftover)

Wow. Agree that you have two or three too many patterns in here, when there should only be one star. Paint won’t pull it together. Countertop is the easiest fix, but that still leaves the two different tiles that are fighting each other. What’s going on the shower floor? Please let it be plain white.

floor is plain black. the overall room isn't that big so with some vanity rugs/shower or bath mats not a huge amount should be visible. was thinking about painting the shiplap black and the rest of the walls plain white and trying to tie in the browns from the counter maybe in decor on shelves, etc. in other parts of the room. and take down the side backsplashes but not the back if we do end up figuring something out that is more appealing that then craziness going on with it now. niches will also be the plain black from shower floor

Do you mean the shower floor will be plain black? and the niches? and someone suggested a black countertop. Plain black in a bathroom looks good the second the housekeeper leaves, but the first time someone brushes their teeth, or doesn’t wipe up a water drop, and i looks like a dorm bathroom.

Can you make the end walls of the shower white, instead of black?

The brown in the counter isnt the biggest problem, its that there is just too much going n with patterns.

Also, Painting the ship lap black and the walls white is going to give you another pattern. Removing the shiplap, paint the walls white and using white tile on the rest of the shower walls will calm down some of the patterns..

I agree with other posters - there's just too much going on. Would suggest replacing some of the materials. Honestly, I think I would suggest replacing everything except the shower tile. Would suggest mostly solid colors so that the shower is the real standout. Good luck!

Way too much going on change the counter that will be cheaper than most other changes the ship lap has got to go no way does it work in that very contemporary space and IMO neither do those floor tiles but if you keep the shower and floor everyother choice needs to be plain not one speck of pattern . Make sure the lighting is LED 4000K too.

A shower curtain covering up the stripey wall tile would be one way to cheaply 'get rid of' one of the patterns..but even then that counter top and the floor fight each other. Or maybe it's the ship lap and the stripe in the counter that puts my eyes to circling. The ship lap is farm house the floor is heritage look, the shower tile is disco 70s --they do not work together. Cheapest way to 'pull this together' is a solid shower curtain hiding the shower and removing the ship lap or counter.

Please next time you redo a room, find yourself an interior designer to help you. It will in the long run save you money and the upset you're going through now.

Or just post on the forums with your samples and ideas BEFORE you buy anything and definitely before you install anything!

We have all made mistakes. I installed an expensive glass tile on the ceiling of a master shower. Looked perfect in a small 4x4 sample but awful in large quantities. Ripped out the next day and replaced with a simpler version. When I say "I" I really mean I had to pay a tile guy to install, rip out and re-install, so not an easy decision to make, but it had to be done.

Stacey, you asked a question and got an answer. It is not going to be solved with a bathmat and quart of black paint. You need to accept the answer and figure out the best solution within your budget.

I like the floor tile very much. I would change out the rest of it. Go for the rest with no or very muted patterns, but steer clear for all boring white. Some very muted tone of a color you like.

You’ve got pattern on the floor, pattern in the shower, pattern on the wall, pattern on the counter. Too much! It’s not the colors, it’s the pattern and they are all different styles. You have shiplap and farmhouse style floors and then very modern shower tile. Something has got to go, what is it? That depends on the style you decide. The cheapest option would be to get rid of the shiplap and change the counter. I still don’t like the floor tile with the shower tile though, they are two completely different styles. Good luck
