Double Vanity with make-up section in the middle

I am planning on putting a make-up vanity section between two sinks.

In your experience, is it better to lower the make-up section a few inches or keep it the same height as the sinks and have a continuous countertop?

I have about 9ft - so 39in for each sink and 30 for the make-up area.

As I am 5'2" I would benefit from a lower section. How tall are you---decide based on that.

When this was a more popular bathroom option, vanities were often only 32 inches high, and the lowered section even lower. Now, most vanities are being made as high as kitchen counters - 36 inches. What do you plan for the height of yours? Then, as Rho Dodendron asks, how tall are you? Do you want to sit on a short vanity stool, or a counter stool? Do you want to let things occasionally fall off the edges onto the make-up section? Can you put the make-up section on one end, preferably near a window? Or have it entirely separate?

Designers will come on here and tell you that nobody wants these sit-down vanities anymore. I do. I use my 36 inch tall end of my vanity for this purpose, to sit and do my hair. If you want this feature, get it. The configuration of having the lowered section in the middle is a 1980s-1990s look, so being more practical and having one continuous countertop between your two sinks is more ”today.” You may also want to price out the difference between the countertop fabrication with the different layouts. Do two extra cuts (to lower it in the center for the make-up vanity) cost much more than a continuous 8 or 10 foot long counter, or is the longer counter more expensive because it is harder to move than 2 four foot long ones and a two foot long one? You may want to ask.

sloyd - yes, I think you are right about building out the plywood. Though think we need to worry about an edge on the bottom. At least the glass guy that was out here already said that glue is not enough for holding up the mirror, need something on bottom (I'm sure clips would work but think a ledge could kind of disappear.) horsenemisis - the details for my inspiration picture definitely explain there is a flat piece of mirror between two separate med cabinets. that's what makes it so great since this isn't obvious looking at it. I agree - the shim edges don't need to be exposed though the only way to open the cabinets is by putting fingers on edge - nothing to grab very well. But this is a separate problem and I'm checking out some other hardware that may help with this. And I think you may be right about there not needing to be a shelf (scratch what I wrote to sloyd) - If my contractor (not the glass installer) agrees, we may go with that assumption. Like your idea about the white boards - my contractor is more of a tile guy than a carpenter so glad to have more details on this. enduring - priming and finishing in advance sounds like a good thing for me to ask my contractor. Since this is for a closet all you'll need to close the doors are ball catch/latches. The strike plate goes on the top frame and the ball attaches to the door. Dummy handles are then attached to the door. If you're a novice DIY'er, I wouldn't recommend trying to hang doors as your neighbor suggested. You'd be much better off buying the double doors with a jamb (you can buy them hollow vs solid) and the price shouldn't be much, if any, more. It will definitely be less work. Measure the door openings carefully and allow room for shimming when you're determining the size doors you'll really need. I also suggest you go to a store that specializes in doors since you'll have more selection and probably better prices than the big box stores. We've purchased doors recently and the door supplier beat HD both in price and delivery time. Here is a link that might be useful: ball catch

Suggestions for vanity mirror(s) with make-up area

I have a sink and lowered vanity area in my master bath. I have a custom mirror treatment with wall to wall mirror and then decorative mirrors which demarcate the sink versus seated vanity area. The sink has two vintage sconces which are for styling and the seated vanity area has a lit "Hollywood style" lighting arrangement. I'll have the shiplap a contrasting color to the other cabinetry so when you look in the room, it gives the front island some interest. But, I'm pretty traditional. I'm doing all cabinetry the same color and keeping it light and bright. I don't have a window in the kitchen, although there is a huge one in the adjoining breakfast nook. But since there isn't a window in the actual kitchen, I want to reflect as much light as possible with lightly colored cabinets. Plus, I'm doing leathered fantasy brown marble countertops and back splashes, which are beautiful but busy all by themselves. I want them to be the star of the show. I want to confuse the eye as little as possible. I'm no designer though and I don't necessarily go with what's in vogue. I want something I will still love in 10 years. Plus, if I ever tire of my island color, shiplap will be easier to paint than deco doors or cabinetry.

I recently remodeled and had the sink portion raised to the new higher height and I had a vanity lowered so that I can sit at it comfortably.

I really don't understand why someone would want to stand bending over a sink while they do their hair and their makeup. It is so much better to be able to sit while I do it. FWIW I have always sat as I previously had a vanity in the master bedroom but decided to reconfigure the master bathroom vanity when I remodeled and have a sit down area in the master bath.

A little different take on the height: The vanity in our master is 7 1/2' wide and 37" tall. I'm 5'2". I've never in my life sat for makeup or hair unless at the stylist's and she's doing the work. If I want to steady a hand for an application, I just put an elbow down. No bending required. Not over the sink, but on either side of it for my tasks.

I wouldn't want the different height, prefer the continuous linear view. And, I'm not young, but old enough to be retired ;)
