Bakers rack or pendant lights above island? Or both?
Comments (17)Johnliu, point well made. However, when you have a small kitchen, the neat/tidy pot rack utilizes space that would otherwise be vacant. And it can look pretty darn good doing it too. It is just a very utilitarian accessory for a busy cook with limited storage space. LIDS are always an issue. I have several decorative metal plate racks which hold 4 plates each. Purchased from Mobile Fixture here in Alabama, and they are a restaurant and kitchen supply store. I was able to put some of my flatter lids into the plate slots, and now finding the right size lid for the job is not such a noisy problem. Here's my current pot rack and IKEA utinsel bar. I admit this is overkill and sloppy, but we are nibbling away at a kitchen redo, and everything has to be somewhere. And here is the current state of affairs in the back porch which will one day become part of the kitchen redo. Note on top of the left M/Wave where the orange enameled pan is, those are lids and racks in a wire plate rack, forget where that one came from. And then here is the regular metal plate rack used as a lid rack for the time being. When I redo the kitchen, a built-in table with a countertop will be installed adjacent to the range. IKEA makes the one I will buy if I cannot use the s/s topped piece you see under my current pot rack. I already threw out the old range, and we're now cooking on this Waring Pro 2-burner hotplate. It works for us. But you should see how my hubby's friends shake their heads when they learn I threw out the stove!!!...See MoreDouble windows over sink---one pendant or two?
Comments (7)I think I would have to see a lighting plan (i.e. placement of the ceiling fixtures, etc.) to really give an opinion if two were too much. But by just looking at your windows, they are wide, almost square shaped. With that width I think the the two pendants would be my preference. The other question is do you need the two lights for more light - versus one. My motto on the kitchen is more light is better, especially if you don't get a lot of natural light (I have north facing windows.) You can always spend a few extra dollars and get dimmers on some of the lights if you think you have too much (but can't do much if you have too little.) Someone once recommend hanging balloons to mock up the lights to see if you liked it in your kitchen, keeping in mind that lights that are opaque will probably be less visually impacting than the balloons. But I found the balloons very helpful in decide size/scale/location. Good luck....See MoreDouble Islands or a Single Island with a round table/chairs
Comments (35)We also have a two island kitchen and love it. We entertain frequently and all family get together's have been moved to our house since we built. It's nice to have an island that is dedicated to food prep and cooking, while the other island is dedicated to platters brought by guests, setting up a drink station, leaning on to talk to someone, walking around, etc. The kitchen is the heart of our home and we find that even when I'm not cooking, it's where people gravitate to. Even when we're not entertaining, I cook almost every meal from scratch, so we designed the kitchen with that in mind. The one comment I have on "tiring" of something is that I found after designing and building our home (which I thoroughly enjoyed and wanted to do again immediately after finishing) is that there are always "what ifs" or "we could have done it this way, or that way" or "next time"... It's not that I don't like our current design choices, it's just that my mind is always wondering. If I had to the opportunity, I may do it differently, I may not.. it would depend on how our life was structured at the time and the foreseeable future. I actually agree with Sophie (is the sky falling?!?) - design for how you really live. And if you like 2 islands, build 2 islands....See MorePhotos where Double Hung & Casement Windows are both used?
Comments (31)I really appreciate all the advise you folks are offering! You're giving me lots to think about that I didn't know and a new perspective on things I did know. yes it does, the narrow meeting rail gives it away, it would be more noticeable if the windows were side by side. I I'm glad you said "narrow" because that made me realize I really need to compare this to the brand/model of DH window I choose, because if the meeting rail is wider, it will be much more noticeable. the encompass is a pretty cheap window, I am not to familiar with there casements so I am only referring to there double hungs at this point. Good to know. The encompass is the one we were looking at for DH and the 250 series for casements. I'm realizing now that our window budget of $11k is probably too low. I had never purchased/priced windows before, so I didn't question the builders number. Now that we are looking at them....I wish I had put some more thought into it. A quick window count and a trip to Lowe's would have caused me to question that a little more. We are supposed to get the builders discount, but even with a decent discount that price would be hard to meet. What other brands does your building supply store carry? I'm not sure. I know they carry Ply Gem, Pella and Anderson. The one time we spoke about Anderson, they said they were about $700/ window, so the conversation didn't go any further. Are Anderson really THAT expensive? Just the screen on the inside (casement) vs the outside (double-hung) will make windows in the same bedroom look different. You would need to use casements in all bedrooms and casements are more expensive than DH's. perhaps you could use an in-swing casement but I don't think they're made in PVC. This is an excellent point. I knew the screens were inside on a casement, but I've been so focused on the exterior view, I hadn't thought about the screens on the interior. I guess I forgot because in our last home all the screens were stacked in the garage instead of on the casement windows. :) Although the casements cost more it might not be any more $ since we were adding windows to the side of the house instead of just changing a DH to a casement....See MoreRL Relocation LLC
