Before and After: 4 Bathrooms With Dashing Double Vanities
New double vanities add counter space, storage and style to these remodeled bathrooms
A pair of faucets. Loads of storage. And plenty of counter space. When it comes to double vanities, there’s a lot to love. Check out the before-and-after photos of these four bathroom remodels with dashing double vanities and let us know which ones made you look twice.
After: Wolfe gave the bathroom a new style inspired by Scandinavian minimalism, with a pleasing palette that references the surrounding desert. The natural, earthy materials contrasted with white provide a calming atmosphere.
Among the many upgrades, the new double vanity with its floating oak cabinets, brass hardware and sleek quartz countertop is a standout.
“We used natural oak with a clear stain for the vanity to keep the material as natural as possible,” Wolfe says. “We added a lip around the drawers to add a little detail of an edge around them.” Brass handles complement the warm wood. “Mixing brass and chrome was an eclectic touch that gives the room a more custom feel,” she says.

The countertops are a plain white quartz, three-quarters of an inch thick. They have a slim edge, another Scandinavian minimalist touch.
The wall-mounted faucets were an aesthetic and functional choice. “They maintain the minimalism while freeing up counter space,” Wolfe says. “And they make cleaning the countertops easier.”
The towel rings, which are brass and affixed to the wall with leather straps, add to the custom feel. “The leather adds another layer of texture,” Wolfe says.

2. Classic Charm
Bathroom at a Glance
Who uses it: This remodel was for an investment property with two children in mind.
Location: Dallas
Size: 117 square feet (11 square meters)
Designer: Jessica Koltun
Before: Because this Dallas ranch house was an investment property, designer Jessica Koltun created a versatile design to appeal to as many people as possible.
The former hallway bathroom was worn and dated, and it didn’t suit the home’s new style. The vanity drawers and doors no longer closed properly. And the soffit above the vanity made the space feel cramped.

The former hallway bathroom was worn and dated, and it didn’t suit the home’s new style. The vanity drawers and doors no longer closed properly. And the soffit above the vanity made the space feel cramped.
After: Koltun removed the soffit above the vanity to make the space feel larger and painted the walls in Pure White by Sherwin-Williams to keep the room bright. She chose a dark color for the vanity to anchor the piece in the space.
“The cabinet color is called charcoal, but it has blue undertones, so it can go more gray or more blue depending on the light,” she says.
The Shaker-style cabinetry and curved faucets also lend classic touches. Koltun chose polished chrome for the faucets, for a shiny look while staying on budget. “I love to mix metals, and chrome is an inexpensive option for faucets,” she says.

The cabinet pulls have a gold finish. “A good way to mix metals is to use two different finishes and split things in half,” Koltun says. Here, the countertop provides the dividing line — all of the metal finishes below it are gold, and all above it are chrome.
“Because the vanity is so dark and the floor is a busy pattern, I wanted to keep everything from the counter up light and airy,” the designer says. This meant choosing a marble-look quartz for the countertop, white grout for the white tile backsplash and clear glass shades for the sconces. Koltun flanked the mirrors with sconces for good facial lighting.

3. Lovely Ledge
Bathroom at a Glance
Who uses it: A professional couple with three young adult sons, one of whom is in college but lives at home part time
Location: Plymouth, Minnesota
Size: 80 square feet (7.4 square meters)
Designer: Mary Maney of Crystal Kitchen + Bath
Before: These Minnesota homeowners wanted to rethink the dated master bathroom in their home in Plymouth, Minnesota, and create a smarter layout in a clean style. So they hired designer Mary Maney of Crystal Kitchen + Bath to give the space new life.
The tight layout wasn’t the only thing the homeowners disliked about their previous bathroom. The green walls and the double vanity with its cultured-marble countertop and stained oak cabinets had fallen out of favor.

After: Maney added a longer vanity that provides more storage than the previous one. “They wanted to keep the double sinks but needed to gain storage at the vanity,” she says. “Each sink base now has two drawers, plus there is a three-drawer cabinet between the sink bases for additional storage.”
The semicustom vanity is painted white, with brushed-nickel hardware. The faucets and three-light fixtures above each tall mirror are also brushed nickel.

A seamless engineered-quartz countertop and 9-inch-tall backsplash mimic gray marble with white wisps. A 4-inch ledge made of a solid-surface material provides a spot for makeup and toiletries. The ledge was inspired by hotels one of the homeowners had visited during her frequent travels for work. “It is easy to keep clean, and the shelf wraps around and becomes the top cap of the half wall in the shower,” Maney says.

4. Cool Concrete
Bathroom at a Glance
Who uses it: A professional couple
Location: Beaverton, Oregon
Size: 125 square feet (12 square meters)
Designers: Stephanie Dyer and Veronica McCoy of Dyer Studio
Contractor: Dave Rush Construction
Before: These Oregon homeowners hired Stephanie Dyer and Veronica McCoy of Dyer Studio to create a new master bathroom that would feel like a sporty spa.
The inspiration for the new vanity began with the existing vanity’s plywood bamboo countertop, which the homeowners and designers hoped to reuse. That didn’t work out due to its configuration, but it did inspire them to use the light-colored species on the vanity and shelves and to keep a minimalist aesthetic.

After: The light bamboo used for the double vanity cabinet wood adds subtle texture and offers a lovely contrast against the minimalist concrete sink. Using local craftspeople was a priority throughout the entire remodel — the sink was fabricated by Cement Elegance of Bend, Oregon, and the hardware is from Schoolhouse in Portland.
The stripes seen on the vanity wall are a playful locker room-inspired touch, and they continue across the floor and up the walls. The pros at Chase Tile meticulously composed the stripes from square mosaic tiles in soothing gray, white and green tones. “We used shades of green throughout the home. They fall into a eucalyptus-mint range,” Dyer says.
Faucets: Hansgrohe

The team could not recess the medicine cabinet, so Dyer had local cabinetry company R. Olson Design add a bamboo plywood frame around a ready-made surface-mount unit to match the vanity and shelves. “And he was able to fit the frame within the squares of the tile,” she says. The frame also provides an extra shelf along the bottom.
The streamlined sconces add a strong yet minimalist linear touch. Another light is hidden in the white trim on the ceiling. Dyer carefully placed it so the light would not reflect directly in the mirror.

Who uses it: This remodel was for an investment property.
Location: Scottsdale, Arizona
Size: 120 square feet (11 square meters)
Designer: Iconic Design+Build
Before: Designer Kaitlyn Wolfe of Iconic Design+Build was hired to transform a bland 1990s primary bathroom in Scottsdale, Arizona, into a serene and inviting space that would appeal to a wide range of potential buyers.
The former bathroom included a double vanity with oak cabinets in a honey-colored stain, with a white cultured-marble countertop. The large inset mirror and light fixtures above the vanity looked dated.
