A couple of solutions would appeal to me, and we like the combination of a traditional touch with clean contemporary: 1) since the opening has a corner trim on each side of the entryway: u could transition to a narrow crown molding. Looking at the wall with the windows etc, i think it needs something at the ceiling and it need not be the same width but of similar style to blend. By having it narrow, it could continue around upper cabs since these seem to be flush to ceiling (?) I would be inclined to paint the narrow trim at the cab tops to match the crown molding. 2) having either a picture rail type molding across the windows and connecting them might be a workable alternate to tie in the other space 3) Most definitely i have a problem with how the molding terminates short of (away from) the entryway. It could have gone to the actual corner or even overlap that corner casing that appears to be 1 3/4 - 2" wide. Is the flat wider piece that is flush up against the non-kitchen ceiling part of the crown molding (is it integral to it?) If so it should extend to the opening or perhaps continue as a "ceiling framing" in the kitchen...sort of mimic a little soffett. Good luck

Our situation is a little different. We are installing new cherry (light/medium stain) cabinets ceiling height with 5" crown with same finish. We intend to put 5" crown in dining area of room (kitchen/dining area is 20x12 and each are is approx. 10x12). We plan to paint dining area crown white. Both the custom cabinet rep and my son, who has many years of remodeling experience, claim this is commonly done. In fact, I have a 4' break in kitchen crown over a door that will also have the white painted crown. That seemed odd to me but both assured me this is common. I purchased raw crown from cabinet company for dining area to assure that the profile matches which is important. My son and cabinet rep had different opinions about joining the painted and stained crown. The cabinet will install the cabinets and stained crown and my son the rest of the crown. The cabinet rep suggested mitering the corners but my son said he was old school and would use coping saw to join the crown. I hope this is helpful. Best wishes

Are they going to collide? Is there going to be a frieze on the cabinet so the crown ends up at the ceiling? If not, then I guess you run both crowns independent of each other. If they do collide, Run the cherry crown first, all the way to the corners, and cope the room crown to it so there is a perfect transition at the corners; I picture the cabinet getting two pieces of cherry crown, one long and one 12" return. I'm guessing that the room crown is a larger molding with a completely different profile. This means that the carpenter will have to skillfully cut away the negative profile of the cherry crown from the white crown so the two would form their differential union. Casey

You've got several problems. If you buy more of the same crown from your cabinet company, you'll still have to deal with the gap above the corner cabinet. If you raise the existing crown to the ceiling, it's very unlikely you'd find unpainted crown that matches it's size and profile, plus you'd then have to deal with a gap between the cabinets and the bottom of the crown. Here's what I would do. Choose the new crown mold you want for the rest of the room and measure it's height (how far down from the ceiling it comes). Make a mark on the wall at that height, then use a level to transfer that height to the stained crown and mark it. Then, trace the old, existing crown's profile onto the wall with a pencil. Now you have a mark where the bottom of the new crown will intersect the old crown, and another mark where the old crown will have to be narrowed to fit underneath the new. Carefully remove the stained crown from the corner cabinet. Next, build a frame above the corner cabinet that's the same height as the new crown, and that extends beyond the cabinet to the point at which the new crown will intersect the old. Now, install the new, painted crown around the kitchen and across the new soffit. Last, run the old crown through a table saw and cut it down so that it fits underneath the new crown. With me? This is a tough one to visualize.
