Comments (8)Gabe15, What?? Is Aaron's aka TyTy?? I hope not!! On the bamboo forum, of which I am a regular poster, there is a constant on-going show of dislike for TyTy. I guess the feeling is the same everywhere. The Orinoco that I received was just a mushy mass of rotting tissue that really stunk. I planted it anyway, and after most of the Summer went by, I decided to plant something else in it's place, when I noticed that a tiny tiny little banana tree was trying to grow. With a lot of care, it finally became a healthy large banana plant. In my defense, I must say that if you noticed in my earlier posts, I did not recommend them, just stated where I purchased the bananas from, and no, I have not ordered from them since. Comments (1)goatster, we're in the same boat and the same zone (7b). I'm trying a Texas Star and a Snow Banana. You may want to consider Musa Sikkimensis (Darjeeling). The Texas Star is supposed to produce viable fruit, but I'm not sure about the other 2. It will be a challenge to get any banana to bear fruit in 7b. From what I understand, they need at least 10 months of continuous warm weather to flower and set fruit. It can be done, but will take work......you'll have to dig up the entire plant and overwinter it in your garage or basement. Plan on 2 years before you see any bananas. Comments (5)In zone 9, you shouldn't have any trouble growing them in the ground if you want to. If you see bananas in your zone that aren't doing well, it is probably because they aren't watered enough, or have any compost or attention paid to them. A lot of people here (Texas) have bananas growing, usually along their back fence, but they don't give them any attention or extra water, and it has been very dry here this year. From your description, it sounds like you might have a variety from the red banana group (such as *Ensete ventricosum* or *Musa* 'Red Dacca'), though it's hard to tell for sure without seeing pictures. The reddish hue on the underside of the midrib is a common trait in some red banana varieties, but it can also occur in certain hybrids. One way to narrow it down is to check the size of the plant, the shape of the leaves, and if you notice any other color variations as it matures. Since you've grown Dwarf Cavendish and Musa Basjoo, you probably have an eye for those differences. If possible, you might want to upload a few pictures here so the community can help with the ID. Also, keep an eye on the new growth. If the red hue deepens or becomes more distinct, that could help in identifying the plant as well.
