Brazilian Banana Plants II, How Do You Like These Bananas????

Let me try that again...

This gives a better perspective of the size of these banana plants. Being six foot tall and wearing boots, this person is still made to look small next to these tall bananas.

What is the scientific name for the Brazilian crossed banana?

Nice plants! Cultivated bananas dont really have scientific names, they are just Musa 'Brazilian' in your case. They do however fall under scientific subgroups like (AA),(AAA),(AAAA,)(AB),(AAB),(ABB),(BBB) and (feh'i). I think i got most of them, im not sure which one Brazilian is in though.

Dave, you are correct!! Though my Orinocos are done with, I left my Basjoo in. To my surprise, I see 2 little pups that are pushing up on the Basjoo! Couldn't believe it. ironic story..... I ordered 4 banana plants from a site last week to replace my Orinocos. Last night I go to my wifes Aunts house and we are talking about bananas. Shes like, "Oh I got 2 in the basement that I don't want". I was like huh? How many times do I go over someones house and ask me if I want banana plants? loll Point of the story is that if I would have waited to order the new ones, I could have ordered 2 less and save $$. No Ill have 6 of them and haven't a clue where to put them! lol And the ones she gave were stored from last winter and are about 5ft big!! Couldn't believe it! Strange luck I have! -Chip

Hi,I usually hang out in the brugmansia forum,but lurk here occasionally. I believe that what happened to your plant is that while it was still tightly rolled up in the p-stem,or just as it emerged,before it un-furelled,an insect,probably a beetle or a grasshopper among others,bit one hole in the leaf that went through a few layers of rolled up leaf.As the leaf unrolled the hole spread out,and it looks like a bunch of different bites,but it is all from the same bite. Sort of as if you rolled a piece of paper tightly,then took something and cut a small hole in it,then unrolled it,you would see a bunch of holes,all in a row,that looked like something ate it,but it was just 1 hole at first.Hope that makes some sort of sense to you,I know it sounds odd,but,I'll bet that's what happened. What to do with my Dwarf Banana plant?

I have had a Dwarf now for a few years and I have had it in WI the whole time. to respond to jordanz questions. First for the winter keep it inside you really shouldn't need to upgrade the pot I have on that is almost three feet tall and it is in a 14" pot plus if you keep it in the same pot if it reaches its max capacity in the pot it won't overgrow your house! just because they are a dwarf they can still reach sizes up to 5 feet! I have 5 banana's and they range from sizes from 2 feet to about 4 and a half feet in height. For you second question, it is true that they are very heavy feeders. I feed mine twice a month but not heavy either time more like a moderate feeding and the plant will not start to produce fruit until it is fully matured. It can take up to two years if it is growing at a continuous rate. I have had fruit a few times from my dwarf. the fruit is only about 6 to 8 inches in length but it is neat to see them grow and I think makes them even more delicious when you can eat them. How do I get rid of banana trees ?

I have never had to take a banana tree out BUT I did remove 2 oak trees this spring by using a cordless reciprocating sawsall with a brush blade from diablo and I cut into the dirt and used a sharpened hole shooter shovel ( a skinny shovel) to lift them. I bet the saw will separate between the trees pretty well. The saw cut right through the dirt. I used a cordless but your power source is not far so one could use a corded sawmill. I would put a tarp down on that pretty rock work to keep the sap off of it. Duck tape it downs it won't move. Sawsalls are GREAT gardening tools

Thanks Gabe15. I got that idea from someone a while back, who told me that Brazilian Bananas were a cross between two other varietes. I wrote it down but it got lost somewhere while moving.

Cliff, I don't recall the name of the online nursery that I purchased them from, but have the website saved on my old computer. It may be a few days before I can find the info. I will post it here when I find it.

I also ordered Orinoco and Dallas Star at the same time from them.

Gabe15, What?? Is Aaron's aka TyTy?? I hope not!!

On the bamboo forum, of which I am a regular poster, there is a constant on-going show of dislike for TyTy. I guess the feeling is the same everywhere.

The Orinoco that I received was just a mushy mass of rotting tissue that really stunk. I planted it anyway, and after most of the Summer went by, I decided to plant something else in it's place, when I noticed that a tiny tiny little banana tree was trying to grow. With a lot of care, it finally became a healthy large banana plant.

In my defense, I must say that if you noticed in my earlier posts, I did not recommend them, just stated where I purchased the bananas from, and no, I have not ordered from them since. I'm looking for a Saba, but will order from another nursery.
