Use same color paint for foyer, hallway and family room?
I have a two story foyer. The 2nd floor hallway that can been seen from the foyer goes down the stairs and into the family room. Would it be ok to use 2 different paint colors? Would you do one for the foyer and the other for the upstairs hall and family room? Currently it's all the same color except for the back wall that the fireplace is on. Because of the light (south facing foyer and north facing family room), it tends to look different anyway. Probably sticking with a neutral greige or beige but any Sherwin Williams color suggestions appreciated as well. I feel like it's a lot of wall to do something too colorful. We're planning to get new furniture too. Thanks for any advice!

PRO2 years agoI took a couple inspiration photos from your idea books to pull some colors together. I would lean to hues in these basic tones and they are on the warm side. Lighting is key in all spaces, so consider multi layers of lighting for great looks. So see what appeals to you most and then a neutral wall color can be found that works with your intended palette. If you can find a sofa or painting or even a rug you love. That can provide direction to set your color palette.

Comments (24)Oops. I'm only just seeing this. The paint color is Benjamin Moore's Smoke. I use Aura paint, which is full spectrum. I think colors look great with full spectrum paint. :) The dining room is more of a nook in an open condo. The left side is where the front door and coat closet are. The right side is where you enter the kitchen (there is a bar there, too). Most of my neighbors have a tiny table and two chairs in the space, but one uses it for a desk...it's really a pass through. The chairs were custom made. They were an insane splurge about three years ago, before those chairs were everywhere. My options were a Ballard Designs chair that I didn't feel comfortable buying sight unseen, and similar chairs by Bernhardt, Z Gallerie, and Baker. I had a picture of the fabric I wanted in my head (cream, geometric stitching with a slight sheen), so I wound up having the chairs made. Comments (7)I'm brand new and definitely an amateur, but I would probably stay with a more neutral color, as you suggested. My entrance is somewhat similar in style and floor coloring. We used a Lowes color (back before we knew that there was a SW nearby us) It's called Cream in my Coffee and looks like it says. So I would say stay with a lighter more neutral color. But you don't *have* to I don't think. Other people here could give you much better guidance than mine though, I'm sure! Comments (7)Personally, I wouldn't paint walls white. It doesn't look homey to me and would be very hard to keep clean as white shows every bit of dirt. If you want something in the white family, SW Navajo White is a popular shade. I think BM has a similar shade called Indian White. Even a beige like SW Kilim Beige or Sand Dollar would look nice, IMO. I've read that Kilim Beige is SW's most popular beige color. Comments (19)I would say to ignore the trends and paint a color that suites your space(s), and one you like. You have to look at it for years to come. Trendy colors come and go almost annually. We just painted our LR and foyer (and eventually up the steps) BM Beach Glass and it is beautiful. It shows as a grayish blue/green color...at times more grayish/green, others more grayish/blueish, and most times you can see a tint of all three (there is NO blue in the paint mix at all) based on the light that hits it at various times of the day. It is quite an interesting color. I consider it a neutral because it goes with any color I put up against it from reds and even yellows. BTW, love the silhouettes but they need to face each other.

Here is Colorography for Agreeable Gray. Get samples of Shoji White. It has LRV of 74 so more reflective but not too white. Great Wall color for use with either neutrals or accent colors. If you want even lighter I can suggest others.
