San Gabriel Mtns. Fire - Angelcub
Comments (11)Good news, I heard from Diana! Here's the mail she just sent me: Hi Eduarda! Thanks so much for thinking of me. The fires are not too close but the largest, the Station fire, is burning in our direction. We're hoping the weather cooperates and the firefighters can get a handle on this fire soon. The smoke has forced us to stay indoors although it is a little better today. Schools are closed, too. Yesterday the Station fire grew to 85000 acres, doubling from the day before. Today it is at 121000 acres and only 5% contained. It really is awful. And there is so much dry vegetation still waiting to fuel it. If you can please tell all who asked on the Cottafe that we are ok. I am at the store getting a few more emergency supplies and extra pet food for some of the evacuated animals. Poor guys - they don't understand what's happening and why they can't go home. : ( Bear hugs, Diana Sent from my iPhone...See MoreAre hotel room safes really safe?
Comments (27)Ahhhh, you're going to see THe WOrld! We went there for our first and only time a year and a half ago. I also planned out the things that I really really wanted to see and do. THa'ts really important since there is NO WAY that you will be able to see and do everything in one trip...unless you're staying for a month!! I'd suggest not hopping from park to park in one day because you'll spend alot of your time either waiting for or on shuttle buses. That time is better spent within a park. Take time out to find a quiet spot and have a little rest if you're not going back to your hotel mid-day. If you buy a refillable cup, you can only use it at that particular hotel/resort....so think about where you are going to be when you need it filled. We used the one from our hotel since we are there first thing in the morning and again in the evening. If you get tired of the parks (noise and the Disney theme pounding in your head!) and you have the time...absolutely go to one of the water parks. Several people changed our minds into going to one and we were sooooo glad we did...it's a really nice getaway. If you bring that small backpack along...put your things into ziplock bags inside it...will be totally dry if you want to run through fountains etc (hey, it's Disneyworld...you can be goofy!) If you are sensitive to heat, buy one of those battery operated spray/fan/mister bottles from a vendor. They were a lifesaver for my daughter. Refill them with ice (Free) from all vendors. Wear a hat, waterproof sunscreen and sunglasses. Oh yeah, and don't forget the most important thing....TAKE ME!!!! I learned everything I neded to know from the Disney (World and Land) web sites....the people on those forums are absolutely fanatical about all things Disney and are worth their weight in gold as far as great advise goes. They'll even know all about what particular rooms to ask for at the hotel and all sorts of stuff you didn't even know existed. Be prepared to spend alot of time tough....there is soooo much info....See MoreMTN: Travel Thank You
Comments (3)Running, I am so glad you liked it! We had a great girls' weekend there. The decor in our suite (7 of us!) was TDF. I will have to find photos! The bathroom was really OTT. But my fave is the lobby. Did you get pet goldfish? I have been to the Palomar once, too. Tho my fave hotel in DC is the Mandarin Oriental for the views. Kimpton does a good job. I've been to them in SF, Seattle, DC, 2 of them in Philly and one in NYC. The only one I was not crazy about was in NYC, the UES IIRC. The street noise was terrible. I have noticed especially in NYC a big difference in window quality which impacts sleep. Sofitel is unnaturally quiet, but their nightly room rates can go from $184 to 650 for the same room, depending on demand! Overall tho, I think Kimpton provides pretty good value and pretty good service and I always enjoy the spaces. I'm so tired of ordinary rooms, no matter how grand....See MoreMtn, this house has your name on it...mine too
Comments (18)My friend lived in Cape Town, her dad taught at the University of Cape Town, and she got her MPH there. Everyone was so interested in her stories and descriptions that she put together a sweet little powerpoint for us. The natural beauty of that entire country is just stunning. She said like most places/countries, there are relatively safe places and then not at all safe places and that yes, the poverty was very bad. She also talked openly about the tribal hatred that she wished the country could get past. She was from one tribe and she said there were people in her family who were disowned because they married into the other side. That lead to some fascinating discussions. She is very young, maybe 30 or so, and thought the entire tribal thing was stupid - but she said that it is still rampant and is underneath a lot of the violence there....See Moreporkandham
