MTN: Travel Thank You

Before the summer flies away completely, a HUGE thank you to Mtn for mentioning the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Philadelphia. I was in the planning stage of a mother-daughter summer trip to DC and Philly, and after seeing that amazing reception area photo as well as Mtn's recommendation I was more than intrigued. Ended up getting slightly obsessed with Kimpton and we stayed at their properties in both cities, the Monaco in Philadelphia and the Hotel Palomar near Dupont Circle in DC.

We returned last week. And I'm now more than slightly obsessed with Kimpton, what great hotels!! Both were wonderful; rooms comfortable, service impeccable, decor quirky and fun and prices very reasonable.

So Mtn thank you very much for helping someone have a really, really nice travel experience.

Speaking of Kimpton, I am also slightly obsessed and the nine-zero is my favorite Boston hotel. Did I mention how incredibly dog-friendly they are? Did I say they routinely give you a credit for driving a hybrid? Love Kimpton!

We too loved the Hotel Palomar in D.C. We were there n 2009. Iirc, it was number 1 on tripadvisor then. Wonderful and reasonably priced.

LOl, Robo. I can certainly see what you like about it! I'm not one for modern, but I have started to warm up a bit to it. Agree, having no pool or dock seems odd. I also don't know anything about Winter Haven.

Thank you for thinking of me! We are redoing all of the decking, so while the contractor was here I asked him to look into my screened porch idea. He wasn't sure how best to do it since we have round columns he'd have to attach the frames to, and he was also unsure whether we could really go column to column, since they are 10 feet apart. I think we could do something I would be happy with from a "curb appeal" standpoint, but sitting on the porch today I realize how much the double screen doors and the supports needed for them, and the lights etc would impact my view looking out. Right now, my fave spot is on the one end of the sofa, and when I i sit there I look out at a wide open 10 foot wide expanse at the top of the steps. I don't think I want to interrupt that in any way.

We have stayed at a ranch, on one of our family "Quadrant tours" where we divided the US into 4 quadrants and did a multi-week tour of each. On the "Southwest tour" about 8 yrs ago IIRC, we flew in to Phoenix, spent time there visiting friends, then did Sedona, Grand Canyon, a houseboat on Lake Powell, a cave in NM, then Santa Fe to see the opera, then on to CO to Zapata ranch (chosen for the sand dunes, bison, and HBR), then Colorado springs and finally Denver for a few days, flying home from there. We really enjoyed the ranch. DH and I have also done multiday HBR trips at an Aussie ranch in the outback. Paws Up was a really hot destination among friends and colleagues for a while, but we never did go. PS I am still manifesting our (latest) trip, darn it. (Arms folded across chest)

Yes, they did a blood test and said no gout. However, I read this: Blood tests to measure levels of uric acid can support a diagnosis of gout, but cannot confirm it. This is because it is possible for people with gout to have normal levels of uric acid, especially during an attack. It may well have been a bite or sting, but if it was that she never noticed it and there was nothing visible. I think it was gout because it was the top of her foot, right over the joint of the big toe, and nowhere else. That is where it usually presents. It is so oddly specific. Also really the amount of food pushed on us was crazy. Like cruises almost.

Running, I am so glad you liked it! We had a great girls' weekend there. The decor in our suite (7 of us!) was TDF. I will have to find photos! The bathroom was really OTT. But my fave is the lobby. Did you get pet goldfish?

I have been to the Palomar once, too. Tho my fave hotel in DC is the Mandarin Oriental for the views.

Kimpton does a good job. I've been to them in SF, Seattle, DC, 2 of them in Philly and one in NYC. The only one I was not crazy about was in NYC, the UES IIRC. The street noise was terrible. I have noticed especially in NYC a big difference in window quality which impacts sleep. Sofitel is unnaturally quiet, but their nightly room rates can go from $184 to 650 for the same room, depending on demand!

Overall tho, I think Kimpton provides pretty good value and pretty good service and I always enjoy the spaces. I'm so tired of ordinary rooms, no matter how grand.
