I don't think the issue of matching is too difficult, those look like pretty standard oak floors. If you install and only finish the new floors, the finish won't be exactly the same, but I bet they can come close. If you can afford to re- finish all of the floors they will probably be able to get them to look uniform. We had a bid to put new wood in and refinish all other wood in the house to match that was about $5000. Your space to install new looks bigger than ours, but we had a lot to refinish, so I don't know if that gives you a ballpark. You could tear out the tile and do a laminate in both rooms with a threshold at the hallway. If you don't try to match, but rather, coordinate that might work. A new tile in both would work, but might be cold on the feet in the winter in your living room. The choices are endless if you decide to start from scratch, its just a matter of taste and budget.

When I posted this question I really didn't figure I would get any responses from others who had done the same thing since it is such a specific situation but then to see a post from someone with the same exact tile! How exciting!! So sorry to have taken so long to reply but we have had family in town and the kids are out of school so life has been hectic to say the least. GWlolo - WOW! Your floors look beautiful!!! Really wishing that I had gone with a thin grout line between my Super Saltillos like you did. Ours are much thicker (3/4 inch I think) and they get so dirty. Love the deco tiles too. We haven't used them in any of the other rooms but do you think it would look strange to use them through the kitchen only? Are your Super Saltillos Saguaro or Desierto? Also glad to see that your wood floors are very similar to the wood look tile that we chose :) miss_kenda - thank you for your input! Once we knock down the wall separating the dining room and kitchen the house will be much more open so we decided to continue the saltillo through the kitchen and start the wood look tile in the hallway at the other end of the galley :) alexx- Holy cow your kitchen is so nice! Had assumed that I would jump on the white subway tile bandwagon but your kitchen has me seriously considering going with a blue backsplash! Glad to see that a grout transition will work despite the grout between our saltillos being larger than they will be between the wood-look tile. The house is 100 years old which means the floors might be the same age. It is entirely possible that the wood has had its day. A wood floor can only be sanded/refinished so many times and then it is finished. It needs to be replaced. Before you decide on 'other' flooring for the house, PLEASE find out if there is enough wood on the EXISTING floor to get another sand/refinish. To do this, you simply need to find a cross section of the wood. This is often found around floor registers or at the floor's edge (in front of a door, or at a step, some place where you see a transition strip). Find a spot to look at the cross section and then MEASURE the amount of wood sitting ABOVE the tongue. You need a minimum of 3mm of wood to achieve a sand and refinish. The other thing I would like to point out is the wood is in rough shape...but the finish (just from the glow in the pics) looks OK. I'm wondering if the previous owners did a 'buff and coat' (adding a layer of finish rather than having a full sand and refinish). This might be because of resale or it might be because there isn't enough wood left to achieve a full sand and refinish. And is this part of the home and addition? If it is, then the age of the floor/addition might be to your advantage.

try and post a few from diff areas so we can get an overall look. post the name and a good shot of the wall color. and post any pics that the new flooring will transition to the flooring you want to keep. that way we can see what we have to match.
