1960’s Mid Century Ranch Update Help
Hello Creatives. We recently purchased a mid-century ranch home, mostly original, untouched. Glad they updated the windows just wish they would have updated to style appropriate windows. There is a massive rock/paver entry way and fireplace on both sides of the living room/dining room walls. Not double sided unfortunately. We are on a limited budget and will do rooms as we go, just want to do a little updating until we have the funds to do major overhaul. In the meantime, we are absolutely stUck on exterior color. Roof is shingles over a metal roof. It is a newer roof so we can’t replace yet. All my idea books and inspo are MCM but I am stuck on what colors I can do on the exterior with the brown looking shingles and all that rock in the front. I really wanted to do some dark and light contrasting colors. Like charcoals, grays, and whites, but I just can’t visualize. I am not opposed to white, Palm Springs vibe either.
On Interior, we have removed panel walls and replaced with drywall, painting is in progress to give us a clean slate and more light. My question, to sand and stain or sand and paint the exposed wood/beam ceiling white. If you look closely you can see the wood has this rough finish on the wood. Note: we aren’t able to paint kitchen cabinets just yet. Any help on color visualization would be so amazing.

Comments (5)Thank you for the comments! We are planning on pulling out all the landscaping along the front of the house. I completely agree that it is way too large. I think seeing all the brick on the right hand side of the house and not being able to see it on the left is part of what is making it hard for me to visualize. My husband's work schedule should allow us in the next week or so to start pulling out the bushes and I can't wait! As much as I would like to take out the trees in the front yard (they are HUGE pine trees) we are going to have to wait and save up to have them professionally removed because of their size. The windows that my husband wants to enlarge are on the end of the house where it is all siding and then on the driveway in the below image where it is all brick. The windows on the front he wants to widen more then lengthen because of the brick placement. I hadn't really thought about removing the shutters completely, so now I am curious to get them down and see what it looks like. I'm not opposed to painting the brick. Which is why I was wondering if I should paint the siding and the brick the same color. Off-white with a bright colored, mid century door was the direction I was leaning, so it sounds like I’m on the right track, @emmarene9, I think the small plants are boxwoods, but I am going to pull those out along with the stones and redo that bed with some more mid-century appropriate, Texas native landscaping - maybe grasses or succulents. Comments (10)I have a 1956 MCM ranch and I would never put vinyl siding on it.I think I would be curious to know what is under it for sure .They often mixed the brick with siding . I have pebble dash stucco and siding on mine I so wish I had brick insted but we have learned to love the pebble dash it is a bit of history where we live in B.C. Another thought to keep in mind down the road is some really cool MCM landscaping . This idea is one of my favorites. Comments (15)Maybe a bigger project that you envision, but I would replace the porch surface with brick, add a broad, deep step off the porch and an equally wide brick walk to the street. Take out the odd little brick bed next to the house and use those bricks for the step, if nothing else. You could also remove all the brick bed areas and use them on the porch.Or you could replace the brick with concrete and face it with your own bricks sawn into 3 pieces to use as facing bricks. Pick up on that orange brick near the step to paint the front doors ochre or sienna. I would paint all the trim, porch siding, column and garage in back with a soft white like those two bricks just below the left corner of the front window. Replace or move your house numbers to the column or to the brick wall opposite it. Other than the azaleas, which I always love, I would replace any non-blooming plants with more azaleas or with low growing evergreen shrubbery that will stay below the windows without you having to maintain it....See More

last yearI have attached some closer pixs of the rock entryway Again any assistance with exterior color combos would be amazing. I can’t visualize whether a dark color as the main color or trim would work with this rock and roof style color.
