We have had a murphy bed for 11 years. We have moved it 3 times. We are in the process of buying another one for our vacation home. You want to use a company that uses SICO Eurobed hardware. The bed mechanism pivots on a steel support plate attached to the inside of the cabinet, it is not floor mounted. The cabinetry is secured to the wall anchoring the wallbed system. Because the unit is not floor mounted, it allows the unit to be relocated much more easily. For safety and visual aesthetics, the SICO Eurobed features an exclusive hidden spring mechanism that makes raising and lowering the bed almost effortless. This is much easier than attempting to fold and unfold a sofa bed. The murphy bed doesn't need to be remade each time it is stowed away unlike a sofa bed. we had a murphy in a door bed when I was growing up in Chicago. In the apartment in the dining area was a closet and we'd roll the bed out (it would be standing up on end) and lower it and then lift it up and roll it back into its closet. it was very nice when it was in the closet there was about 3 feet of unused space at each end I claimed those spaces as my own and had a small desk on one side and orange crates stacked oin the other end for shelves I had many happy times in there listening to my radio.Wish I could find a photo of it

Our house was built in the 20's. A few years later they closed in the "sleeping porch" and we now have a beautiful round parlor with five 5X7 windows, walnut french doors into the living room and a big closet that holds a "real" Murphy bed, with a tag that says 1915. The bed turns out of the closet so easily, then it folds down. We bought a full size mattress from Sears. I spent 7 weeks on it with a broken ankle. Our old house really only has 2 bedrooms, but this was advertised as a bedroom, too. I prefer to call it the parlor/guest room.
