Xmas decor:Anyone else feeling that less is more this year?
Comments (62)I am also one who has enjoyed reading this thread. I have gotten rid of a lot of my Christmas decorations...and I was one the used to put a tree in every room (including the bathrooms), but have cut waaaayyy back....mostly because of health problems and a DH who does not "decorate"....so the outside lights are not put out anymore....because in this cold Kansas weather, it was me out there in January taking them down. I put wreaths with red bows in the windows, along with battery operated candles and a big wreath on the front door. I only put up a smaller tree in the LR and one in the basement family room where we all gather on Christmas to exchange gifts.....and of course, do decorate the fireplace mantle and I use a lot of bright red poinsettias scattered around. I always put out my grouping of singing carolers...they are so ugly that they are cute...and of course, never leave out the two nativity scenes that mean so much to me. When I looked through all of my boxes of decorations, I just kept telling myself.....what you take up from the basement has to come back down....and with my bad knees, it didn't take me long to just leave them there. I do believe that less is more...too many decorations doesn't give the eye a place to rest and gives the "cluttered" look. However you chose to decorate, I hope that each of you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and I hope that 2009 will be a better year for all of us....See MoreAnyone else noticing the negativity on this site?
Comments (72)Honestly, this is the most pleasant forum that I've seen on the Gardenweb site and maybe the whole internet. Others have mentioned the antique forum, garden harvest and the pets forum, but the absolute worst was the Japanese Garden forum about 5+ years ago. There were a handful of know-it-all's who treated all newcomers like imbeciles and things got very very ugly. That forum is all but abandoned now. From my observations, it is always the "closed private party" mentality that gets the fighting started. The internet is largely a public resource and people have to expect anyone and everyone to show up and express their views or ask for opinions. If people want to have private conversations with only like-minded associates, then they should use email, text messaging or set up a private forum. The regulars here are pretty welcoming of the occasional posters that come and go which is what makes it work. I imagine the reason this post is so popular is because as a society we still haven't come to terms with the limitations of written online communication, but at the same time it has exploded in common daily use. Who would have thought 10 or 15 years ago that we would be able to communicate with complete strangers from around the world in writing about every subject known to mankind? There is a huge learning curve as to how to deal with different personalities and different ways of communicating. This seems to be why, on any forum, questions of forum etiquette always receive a lot of responses. It doesn't matter who you are or what type of person you are or what you are discussing, you probably will have run into problems trying to communicate with someone online. It is just a imperfect system (not to sound negative). One thing for sure, everyone here should pat themselves on the back for keeping things so civil as we discuss all things kitchen related....See MoreDid anyone else log on late last night and find NO GW?
Comments (31)I think we're all jumping the gun here and skittish because of the change we just went through - we knew it was coming but they pulled the rug without giving us a date. Seems they were doing some maintenance the other night and nothing more but I think setting up a meeting place on the Houzz forums is a great idea in the unlikely event that our GW side disappears one day - I think we're safe to assume the Houzz side would remain. Whoever sees it first can go over to the What Are You Working On forum and send up a a signal flag - GW MEMBERS HERE or something!!! daisychain - our group did have a long advance warning with a specific date when all MSN groups would be shut down. Our group managers had the ability to email en masse and we did that multiple times to hopefully catch everyone. That gave us time to research other options, but as I said, after 2 other host changes we are on facebook now. I'm sure there are some members who lost us along the way with the changes and others who won't join us because it's now on fb, but that's life - there is an ebb and flow to these groups that would happen anyway....See MoreAnyone else feel more absentminded in isolation?
Comments (24)Thanks, everyone. I was glad to read all of your responses. I initially saw isolation as so close to my normal life that I felt I could probably do it indefinitely without major issues. But after two months I can see a change in me. Raye, I wish I could read the articles you linked, but the Wall Street Journal is ruthless when it comes to non-subscribers. :-) I'll look for some others. Marilyn, I have a book suggestion for you. This one is excellent--well researched and readable. The End of Alzheimer's I also liked an article on memory loss I read a few years ago in Vanity Fair (I think). It gave several suggestions that helped the people in the case histories they cited. The one I remember best was about multi-tasking. It said don't leave the TV or radio on all day. When you do sit down to watch TV, watch it. Engage with it. Don't pick up something else to do while you're watching the show. I don't remember if this included knitting or other semi-automatic task (like the rug hooking I do), but I know the article said focusing on one thing at a time was important....See MoreUser
