What do you mean by Craftsman style exactly? Do you have any inspiration pictures? If not, create an Ideabook in Houzz and save pictures of dining rooms in it. Based on the picture that shows your front door, there is nothing Craftsman about your house. If you mean you want to simplify the decor and move toward Transitional style, then that is doable. Many people who have/had traditional homes have done that over the past five years or so.

Your table doesn't look traditional, so if you get new light fixtures and paint you will be able to make a big change without breaking the bank. In order to be able to suggest a different paint color or direction to go in I would need to see more of your house since you are going to use the same color throughout the first floor. Especially the kitchen since the cabinets and flooring aren't going to change as far as I know. If you are going to keep the same rug in the dining room we need a better picture of that.

To get a sense of what decor changes will lean towards Craftsman, go to Etsy.com and type in Craftsman Decor. You will see rugs, lamps, ceiling fixture, windows, etc. that give you that style.

Just Google craftsman houses and it will help you to “see” some of the outcomes you want. Then you can get help here to find specific items.

One idea would be to paint your ceiling and lower dining room wall a color that works with Morris wallpaper (above the chair rail). There are several beautiful Craftsman wallpapers that will convert your dining room quickly.

Its a lovely table so I see no reason to ditch it. First things first. Based on the architecture I can see in your pictures your home isn't a craftsman so really what you want is something transitional that has an influence of the Craftsman style. Otherwise the room would not fit in with your home and its architecture. With this in mind here are some ideas.

1. Pull the traditional chair rail and put up some board and batten style trim work. Paint it the same color as your baseboards and doors in the house. This will greatly brighten up the space and still fall in line with craftsman style even though its painted and not wood. Or if you want that darker and moody look paint it olive green. You can keep the softer tan above it.

5. I would put down a Morris and Co Inspired rug.

6. I would do some simple cream textured faux linen drapery panels at the window. A dark iron rod.

I would install them as far off the window as possible so that they only cover any trim to allow the maimum amount of light and visually epand the size of the room. Also mount them as close to the ceiling as possible to bring the eye up.

7. Take down any ornate wall decor and do a nice piece of art. or a series of three above that board and batten trim work. beteen the sconces.

This is a craftsman style dining room, is this the style you're looking for?

I think it is interesting how quickly a stranger can point out what isn't fitting in someone else's room. Sometimes I wonder if I could manage to be a stranger in my own room if I took a picture of it and critiqued the picture. Anyway, here are some things I think clashed in your room with your table and wall paint: the painting on the wall, the mirror on the floor, the filagree above the mirror, the thick plush floor rug, the light fixtures, the dinky chair rail, the plant tower. I love your table, chairs, ceiling shape.

I wouldn't aim towards craftsman, as that is a whole architectural style. The thing about craftsman style is the craft part. Craftsmanship can be incorporated into any style. Go without rather than buying cheap "filler" material like the current rug, painting, chair rail. That is the essence of craftsman style, and it works with any home. If you are going for the strong solid feel of a craftsman home and the connectedness with the outdoors of your home, then simplify by eliminating/replacing the items above. Look outside seated at the head of your table and ask what colors you see. Use those on the ceiling and a replacement area rug (thinner and patterned in a craftsman style, like a weaving). Can you hang the mirror on the wall between the sconces? If not, buy a different mirror for that space. Forget the art if you are thinking craftsman simplicity. See if you can find stained glass sconces to replace what you have. The ceiling light doesn't have to match the sconces, just get the proportions right and hung at the correct height, and keep the design simple. There were some good suggestions by others already.

The light fixtures, chairs and art aren’t craftsman but that great table sure looks the part! Heres some pics we took in England of the William Morris’s Red House.

Can you show the rooms open to the dining room? They all need to flow and have some sense of connection.

Replacing the chandelier, sconces, chairs, rug, curtains, art, and removing all iron/scrolly things will of course change the looks, but again, need to see the other rooms for suggestions.

I agree with K L, incl. not going all Craftsman. If you’d like to keep your chairs, but clean them up, here’s what we did to our 2 end chairs this summer: hubby stripped back the old fabric and foam, removed the rolled part and cut the back down a bit (he had to cut a new top piece for the back, which was not difficult at all). We had the chairs reupholstered, and now they look like new, and much cleaner. We had lights similar to yours in our kitchen and dining areas when we bought this house 6 years ago, which we removed upon move-in….it made a huge difference. Not sure now if Craftsman is going to work. The living room and dining room are one area separated by arches. I eventually want to update the living room too. I’d like for it to all flow. We had the fireplace redid a couple years ago. My husband built the mantle. The leather chair and sofa are genuine leather cowhide that were very expensive so of course they will have to stay. I’ll have the chair reupholstered as it was expensive too. The curio cabinet was a lot of money too so my husband would divorce me if I said it can’t stay. Lol. I had upholstered the dining room chairs myself. They were cheap parson chairs that had an ugly glass table with them that I paid $40 for the whole set. My husband took the glass and made a wine table out of it for his man cave. I hate everything in the dining room except for the table.

The sofa table was behind the sofa but for Xmas I put my tree there.

It's a nice dining room - love that large window and the ceiling detail! It would not be hard to update I don't think - just a color refresh would go a long way.

If it were me, I would pull everything out and paint the room a nice light soothing color - put some lush draperies up and install a nice rug. Then I'd replace the ceiling fixture and scones with something more simple. I love an oversized lantern in a room like that - I would be tempted to slipcover the parsons chairs in simple white duck until I could find chairs I like -

I could only paint an accent wall because as you can see with the rounded corners theres no where to end the paint.
