Dark trim vs. White. Updating home without painting ALL TRIM white??
Comments (20)* Also when looking at the hallway ^... that photo of the "door" to the right is actually an elevator door...(Its faux painted...done before we moved here.) That is also the dilemma... if husband paints trim white... there is that door and I do NOT want to paint it white. so can the trim around the door be painted?...See MoreHow to lighten/update kitchen without changing cabinets or counters!
Comments (13)First thing…you need more recessed lighting, with brighter LED bulbs. Also, those pendants are strictly down lights, with a narrow stream of light.. Find pendants that provide both uplighting, and downlighting…with a broader beam…something either open on top, or glass. Secondly, I have no problem with the black counters. After all, I have soapstone in my wood kitchen. However, the black backsplash is a major problem. If you would change that out for a light colored tile, you’d see a huge difference in the feel of the kitchen. Perhaps repaint the dark grey bar area in a similar shade of the new backsplash. Here’s my kitchen…wood cabs, soapstone, celadon green backspash, and lots of lighting…including two halophane glass semi-flush pendants. You’ll have to enlarge the first pic, to see the semi-flush fixture. Do you have undecabinet lights? If not, think about getting them…they make a huge difference in a kitchen’s brightness. You can see in the pics above, mine are on....See MoreIdeas on what could be updated or changed to improve this dated room?
Comments (21)You’re so blessed to have this large space! Love that it’s not matchy-matchy. Later on: Paint the ceiling the ivory color; white ceiling reflects dark gray shadows. Walls and mouldings look good in same ivory. (Check out crown mouldings situated on the ceilings instead of the wall and flush-ceiling chandeliers.) Agree with Trace-china cabinet opposite the window. Then replace it with the wider, dark buffet. Tall slender buffet lamps and a large, tall modern art piece would be a great contrast to the room and ”blend” height from the china cab & new drapery—kids could probably come up with a real conversation starter! Two upholstered dining chairs would be pretty in front of the windows—extra seating. If you need the smaller table, stain it dark or (if no sentimental value) paint it a crazy accent color from the kids’ art and use it between the chairs??? I’d use the sideboard where the dark buffet is now. Darker stain later? (Metal conduit=cheap strong curtain rod; maybe spraypaint it to match the new lamps.) Why is my heart saying to whitewash the sideboard and put it in front of the window during gatherings for a dessert table? On that note, It’s time for me to leave. I’ll see myself out....See MoreHow to update my back entrance without changing basics?
Comments (5)Those horizontal boards -- are they the railing for a deck? It would look less massive if you could use thinner boards and leave a larger gap between them. I'd also add 2 or 3 thinner horizontal boards underneath the upper deck, to hide the braces. If you don't mind loosing some light in the basement window, it would be nice to expand the entry deck all the way to the corner....See MoreM Riz
