First Floor Critique Please. I need your advice and expertise!
Comments (8)Thank you for all of your advice. I have changed the mast. Bath to outswing (THANKS!). We are building in GA, have one child, and have covenants that require the home to be 3500 Sq. Ft. We don't require a mudroom, but the Storage Room will be used for winter coats/Storage and a general oversized storage area. I am not a fan of natural lighting in the closet, for fading/loss of hanging space issues. I do prefer the toilet to be to the deep interior of the Mast. Bath so that there is some privacy when using the toilet while the significant other is sleeping (it's an issue!). I have fought for more windows, but he does not like a lot of natural light for some unGodly reason?? I do not like J and J's at all! This will be primarily used for guests. It's unlikely to be used at all. I'll be playing around with the kitchen island to have symmetry with the sink and also room for the DW to be placed NEXT to it, and not around the corner. My idea for the kitchen is to be a hard working one, with large and rarely used items placed in the pantry on a counter, with storage shelves on the opposite wall. Thank you all so much for your suggestions. It gives me an idea if we are going in the right direction. I have so much to learn! A...See MoreOK Kitchen Friends - Need your Advice elsewhere
Comments (6)Maybe it's the picture. There appears to be 3 contrasting colours. Though nice, the stone could be perceived as distracting with the current colour scheme. The stone doesn't appear to coordinate well with the colour of the house or the roof. There also appears to be 2 different almost contrasting shades of grey with the roof and the exterior. You should try using SW's visualizer tool to see what colour combinations would work for the house, taking into consideration the roof, exterior and stone. You should be able to find some good colour combinations that would work well. Here is a link that may help. Good luck. Comments (33)I think the tiling choice (same through all spaces or different) is a personal preference. If you use the same all through, you'll have a nice visual flow. If the 12x12 is a compelling cost savings in the laundry room and mudroom, I would consider doing some kind of transition in the pantry. It could be something as simple as the same tile style but in different sizes, set up to look like a 'rug'. (See examples below.) Or you could use some of the same type of tile but add new colors for some pattern and interest. Or of course you could go nuts with some gorgeous mosaic tile rug (I think it was Igloochick who found one on eBay) but you have to balance that tile and install cost with the savings on the 12x12. Stuff like interesting tile makes me stupidly happy, so I would do some kind of transition pattern in the pantry, whether simple or fancy. I'd start by looking at what other sizes and shapes your tile choice comes in, and what other colors are in that line that you like. But that's just me and you might have something else that makes you happy! simple tile rug: transition with a simple border - this is probably the easiest (and I think it's good looking) if your tile has some kind of coordinating 2x2s; then the inside of the border could be the 12x12s, set on an angle if you like: two colors:...See MoreI need your advice on flooring choice.
Comments (12)A dark slate would be very handsome...and very dark. You would need to update the lighting in that hallway (which might mean updating your entire electrical panel if it shown to be below today's code). The bench would be "lost" visually on a dark floor. The paint and the trim would need to be updated to "as bright as possible". Personally I think an extension of the wood floor would be an excellent idea. The scheme would not change. It would be a "like for like" change. But the use of this space (hallway) will dictate the material used. If this is a wet entrance with HIGH traffic that is always muddy/mucky the a tile or stone finish is always the best option. It is your choice. Be aware that dark floors will darken the area and make it feel smaller. That means you would have to compensate by either doubling or tripling the amount of lighting you have in that area (add more windows or add more light fixtures....which could lead to more costs)....See Moreherbflavor
