Indulge my bragging about my granddaughter

Granddaughter, LInds, is an official elections operations judge today. She is 16 years old. She saw an ad, thought it looked interesting, and applied. Linds is excited to have been selected as one of the judges. Today is a long day that began at 5:30AM.

She also works at a local snack shop and is an A student.

I did some research on the requirements for poll workers and found that states can use unpaid youth workers for these positions…..an internship, if you will. These workers must be at least 16 and work with an adult.

What a great program and perfect for getting the youth in our country interested at a young age!

In regards to Splenda, the only thing I have seen that has an unusual effect is Splenda in vinegar based pickling. Many sweet pickle recipes call for about five POUNDS of sugar! These same recipes have had a fairly sweet flavor by adding only one or two CUPS of Splenda. I use two types of Splenda here, one is the big bag type that is 'puffed up' and the VOLUME is about the same measurement as a cup of sugar. The other type of Splenda is a fine granulated version, usually found in those little paper packets used to sweeten beverages. Yuu would need far less of that type to sweeten anything. Needless to say Splenda would also work well for most any other acidic food that you would want to 'tame down' a little. With a little sugar added, a tomato sauce can be tasty and less acidic to the tongue. But if I used Splenda, a tablespoon or less would definately be more noticable. Using Splenda in most any jelly making or any home canning is quite safe. However, if its a jelly, you can't depend on the Splenda to set up the pectin (either added or natural). There, I much prefer Pomona pectin, as it needs no sweetener of any kind to set.

Thanks so much for the comments. The blessings are all mine, believe me! Danihoney, that is similar to our son. He was integrated into the classrooms all this time, when he really should have been isolated. He too is a something else to watch and observe.He blows me away at times with his big heart. It is interesting to see which paths he takes from time to time, as it makes no sense to us. We are often trying to put ourselves into his shoes and it is so hard sometimes because we just don't get it. I really think that he would be higher functioning if he would have been diagnosed earlier in life. Although it burdens my heart, there is no need to cry for one single moment about it. We need to face each day being strong and ready for what life throws us. Right now I am not as strong as what I would like to be, but working on it. Thanks for the encouragement. If you can send the link to people you know, that would help them learn about Asperger's and Autism, I would greatly appreciate it. I think that she updates facts (on the left side of the blog) on her break at 8A. Thanks again!!!

Yes, 16 is young but in the state a 16 year old may register to vote although she may not vote until she is 18. Training and vetting is required and all the election operations judges are supervised. It is a big responsibility to be a judge but an honor and privilege. I think it is important that opportunities like this be open to our young people. 16 is not too young to see our democracy in action and to witness the seriousness of community members as they exercise their right to vote. Linds can read, discuss, study US history, civics, and current events at home and school, but the topics of these discussions come to life only as she sees them in action.

I would have thought that any poll worker needed to be a registered voter. I guess not in all states. Good for her.

I just heard an interview with an election commissioner here in Illinois. He was down 1500 election judges at the start of this season. He was able to fill about half of the positions after high schools helped with recruitment.

Good for her! All our election judges are retired. oh, and they get paid about 30% more for the day than a substitute teacher here does.

What a great experience! A couple of years ago some of our poll workers were local high school government students. Thought at the time it was a good idea.

it sounds like she's a really responsible young lady, how refreshing!!

i worked as an election judge for many years, it could be boring during local elections but for general elections, it was always busy and even though the day started at 5:30 am and ended at 10ish pm, the time flew!

i hope your granddaughter enjoys this experience!
