I have a nephew with Asperger's Syndrome. He's 11. My brother and SIL both changed their carrers and became special needs teachers because of him.

That is so very cool! How is he doing? Was he diagnosed early on? I am supposing so if he is 11 and they both are in a special needs program now. I am touched.... that makes me happy. It is so much better to get it while it is early on so they can get that training. Our son was 15 when they finally diagnosed him. It has been tough!

I think he is doing really well. He has his issues, but he's just my nephew and my sons cousin. It took a while to get the Asperger's diagnosis, but they had him diagnosed as Autistic by age two. I remember them needing a diagnosis by two in order to qualify for programs and assistance. He has been integrated in to regular classrooms for a few years now. He is interesting to watch. He handles his own needs pretty well. He gets overstimulated pretty easily but knows just what to do. He has an unbelievable memory and really keeps you on your toes. He is one of a set of triplets so they have their hands full. It's hard to say what his future will hold, but I believe he will be able to find his niche. He's been a real blessing to our family.

Thanks so much for the comments. The blessings are all mine, believe me! Danihoney, that is similar to our son. He was integrated into the classrooms all this time, when he really should have been isolated. He too is a something else to watch and observe.He blows me away at times with his big heart. It is interesting to see which paths he takes from time to time, as it makes no sense to us. We are often trying to put ourselves into his shoes and it is so hard sometimes because we just don't get it. I really think that he would be higher functioning if he would have been diagnosed earlier in life. Although it burdens my heart, there is no need to cry for one single moment about it. We need to face each day being strong and ready for what life throws us. Right now I am not as strong as what I would like to be, but working on it. Thanks for the encouragement. If you can send the link to people you know, that would help them learn about Asperger's and Autism, I would greatly appreciate it. That is really nice. She sounds so mature and I can tell she will succeed in helping others. A special young woman for sure!

Wendy, how nice!

This gets me emotional reading her words again and again. You know, on the intake into the hospital.... they had a question for him. They said, if you could go to the moon (and I think that they said to live.... but we were on a three day no sleep at that time) who would you take with you. He had this sheepish grin on his face, and there was no hesitation in his answer. He said my sister, and pointed to her. It made my heart overjoyed to see how much they love each other. She has been his forever protector against the bullies. She has this hard outside at times seeing how mean people can be, but she is just such a golden hearted girl. I can't say how blessed I am.... my kids are everything to us.
