Yes, good for kids. I wouldn't enjoy sitting on something without a back.

Did it say how high they are? I wouldn't want to be having to sit too far down and then having to try to get out by relying on my guads.

I don't know if this would work for you but I use regular directors chairs. At one time we had two of the stools but for some reason they seemed to tip and of course there's no back support. We've had them for at least 10 years and probably bought them at BBB. We've used them for extra seating inside when there's a crowd and also out on the deck.

Directors chairs would be more comfortable and just as easy to store.

Speaking as a person with a bad back, sitting on those would kill me. Maybe your guests are in better shape than me!

Benton, good question! They are 16” high, where a regular chair is 18” high. That helps a lot! If I order these they would be probably be reserved for DS and his GF, or actual kids. I am reluctant to get directors’ chairs because the sofa out of our porch is a few feet away from the windows of our bedroom and nearly parallel to them so we would see folded chairs behind the sofa. These are small and I can hide them at the end of the sofa where we won’t be able to see them from the bedroom.

If I am thinking kids and twenty somethings maybe I should try to find square matress quilted floor pillows instead?

There is a name for those (often white) plastic stackable outdoor chairs that are sole nearly everwhere and at yardsales. Iconic design. I have screamy back pain, but these chairs are okay. Directors chairs are open right where I need to put a cushion ora hot pack.

Ouch, Jojoco, we don’t want that! I’ve found some cushions but i think they would just be in the way.

Downsizing comes with some challenges; not only is the house smaller overall but the scale of rooms is also smaller. This kitchen is completely serviceable and the storage is wonderful, but it is half the size of our former kitchen. I like and use our current porch more than the old one, but it’s proportioned differently. As our family grows with significant others and children we seem to need more room, not less!

Is there no other place you could store the director chairs if you went that direction? I would guess that a situation where you would need them wouldn't be a spontaneous event and they could be put outside for use for the day or evening and then back to their storage spot.

Any chance you would consider changing your cocktail table? Our cabin’s porch overflow seating is a large padded ottoman.

I think they would be okay. But I sit in a hard chair (at a desk or table) or on the floor about 90%+ of the time at home. If I am in a chair chair, I would rather have something with arms.

If I had something like this for overflow, I would be sitting in one of them by default and whoever the company was would get the real chairs.

Another no vote if you mean to use these for adults. Whether it is a bad back, hip, or knee, these would be precarious to lower oneself into or stand up from sitting.

I agree with Maddie's approach. We have many large ottomans and, IIRC, no coffee tables in either home, inside or out. A tray can turn an ottoman into a coffee table, but a cushion does not turn a coffee table into an ottoman

We’ve tried using ottomans as coffee tables before and it was too much planning to get out the tray before you’re standing there with a drink that needs a landing spot. And when certain people get in the habit of putting their feet on an ottoman they don’t always pay attention to the drink tray 🙄Swapping the table for an ottoman would be a hard no for our clan. I may just have to learn to accept the limitations of the smaller space.

This is one of those times to let go of form for function.

So a coffee table with pull out stools like I posted above isn't an option? I love that vintage one, but there are lots of them available in different sizes for outdoor use. Seems you could have your coffee table and extra seating that slides out of the way until needed.

I looked at a few online Oly, but the size required for tucked under seating is too big for the space. I am trying to keep it as open as possible for our two year old GS who likes to push his bubble mower out there and play with our dogs. One ottoman tucked under isn’t going to help the situation much and the tables that have two seats underneath are just too big. I also don’t want a solid square or rectangle on the porch as I am trying to keep it light and airy. We actually have an ottoman in our downstairs family room that separates into four small footstools or temporary perches and it’s fantastically functional, but we have a lot more space down there.
