What do I do with this black wall in the master bedroom?

last year

I painted this wall black since my bed was going to go up against it. Since it could not be centered due to the door, I had to switch the room around. How can I make this a cute accent wall now?

First of all, thank you for the photos of your cute dog!

I like to see out the window from in bed...will it fit on the wall opposite the window where the dresser is? Might have to remove a nightstand to fit. That's what I would do and walk around the bed to enter the room.

It appears the door can open with the bed on the accent wall fine. I don't think the bed necessarily needs to be centered. "Form follows function" as they say.

Where it is next to the window, move the bed to the right so it clears the window, you may have to find somewhere else for the nightstand. It might work if you pull the stand out so it clears the headboard and abut it to the wall. Pull the bed out a bit so the drapes can hang.

Yes, the accent wall calls for a dramatic gallery display.

Welcome to Texas Benb1. I think you might leave the floor alone for awhile and invest in some nice, large rugs which visually deliniate the spaces you are trying to achieve. The bed area with night tables has an area for example. Two loveseats for lounging opposite each other while having coffee- small table in the center. Rug underneath to accomodate bare feet in the scale of the arrangement. A freestanding full length mirror. A low piece of exercise equipment in one obscure corner, like a Pilates bench or rowing machine. Large scaled, bright pops of color against light backgrounds. Change paint first to a hue in a light shade... something in the top two choices of your color card. This space needs light colored, airy furniture, so as not to drag the eye to any one dark area. The temptation is to overfill it, making it look cluttered instead of unified. I would suggest using a resale shop for filler pieces. Habitat for Humanity Restore or many consignment shops offer good prices on gently used items.

We have an almost identical layout, and the PO's built a window seat with storage. I didn't like it at first, but it does hold a lot of pillows and blankets, which is nice. I struggled with what to do with the window, and ended up with inside mount blinds and an outside mount curved rod with floor-length drapes. I should probably make a nice cusion for the seat, though.

One thing I've learned from the pros and other talented decorators on this forum over the 15 years I've been visiting is that scale matters a lot. When you have a room the size of your master bedroom, you need some substantial furniture (and art, etc.) to make the design work. This was a very important lesson for me to learn, as my house before I was married was a very small bungalow. Everything I brought from my previous home looked silly and dwarfed in the home my husband and I moved into. My art looked like postage stamps tacked to the walls. I didn't know how to decorate in large spaces because I had never done so before, and I always preferred modest, simple furniture and art so it look me years to embrace the larger spaces. But once I did, things started looking a lot better. I've found places to use some of the sentimental items I couldn't part with (in bathrooms, kids' bedrooms, small guest room, as part of gallery walls), but some things just don't work in the larger spaces. Your bed, though very pretty, is probably one of those things. We have a California King in our large-ish master bedroom and it looks great and fits the scale of the room. Find some large art you love too. I'm sure the pros will have better advice, but just wanted to chime in as I went through that same frustrating phase you are in now. Good luck!

I'm guessing since you are painting the dresser you like dyi or you are on a budget. I think a tuff head board, paint furniture white and some pretty drapes. This is a link to dyi tuff headboard and scroll down and she has similar gray color scheme going with white bedside tables grey tuff headboard. You could go with other color that compliment your gray walls/carpet If you scroll the link she shows a picture of the room. I prefer the bed on the accent wall rather than half covering the window.

Could you change the swing of the door? I think it should be fairly simple.

The bed doesn't have to be centered on the wall. It can be centered on the space left when the door is open. You could add some art to hang behind the door that would balance the space when the door is open. Add some art over the bed, too. Stack a couple of pieces to the right and it will be fine. Or a minimally framed tall mirror could work.

If you want to complicate things more... you can look up FengShui, and they have a lot to say about placement of things, colors, etc...

The easiest approach is to repaint the wall if black isn’t working well with what you initially planned. Alternatively, display some art or photos on the wall.
