Thanks for all of the reviews. I will make sure to change the swing of the bathroom doors and will most likely make the pantry door a single outward swinging door. As for the family room, it's 18 x 18'2 including fireplace and built-ins. I'd like it a little bigger but we're tweaking an original plan and trying to only make minor changes to keep the costs down. I think since it's an open plan, I'm ok with the size. I've measured the size against our current family room and I've seen pictures of the family room in a built house and it seems large enough. lyfia, I hear what you're saying about the location of the laundry room but it doesn't really bother me. As for the front porch, I think it's 7' but that is the one last thing I have to confirm. I agree that 7' should be the minimum. Yes, we'll change the french doors to sliders. That works much better. gobruno, I hear what you're saying about the bedroom with the small dormer as the only source of natural light. Unfortunately, in order to keep the elevation the same, I don't think there's much we can do. I'm going to look at pictures of larger dormers to see if we want to make them larger. There are skylights in the playroom but I think we're going to add a large dormer instead. Thank you all for the reviews!

Hey, everyone! Thanks for your advice! We'll be changing the cabinets to white shakers. They definitely look like it would be a good match if we go with a lighter cabinet. I'm not sure about the floor material, but it was stained before. I've been running some looks, and I can't quite find a tile that I think looks too great here. We're considering trying to extend the floor, but we'll need to take a piece over to get it matched at a flooring store.

My small master bath is painted Philadelphia Cream and I've hated it forever. A small sample on the wall looked so creamy and innocuous but four tall walls (9-ft. and vaulted beyond) in a small room make it nearly pulsate. I've been meaning to repaint for ages.

The answers to your questions will change based on how people live--which may be different from how you or I live. My current home has a formal dining room at the front of the house, similar to your floor plan. We use that dining room once a year on Christmas, and only because I feel obligated; the other 364 days of the year are spent eating meals in our eat in kitchen, even when we're squeezing 10 people around our kitchen table. For our new, downsized home (we're in the final sketches with an architect) there will be no dining room, and a very large eat in area for a table in the kitchen. Because that's how we live. So in your floor plan, I'd turn the dining room into the living room as Patricia suggested, and put a table in the current great room. Whether you do that or leave the dining room at the front of the house, I'd personally leave the fireplace as a separating wall between the great room and living room. If you remove it, you'll then have a huge cavernous space (30'x20') that would then be broken up into different seating areas anyway. The fireplace just makes it easier to break up those areas and provide more of a barrier for times when someone might want to watch TV in one area while someone else would prefer to read or listen to music in the other area.
