Lemon Balm tastes like Pledge
Comments (6)Good suggestions.. I'll try those. I already dealt with the drainage problem and will look into the nutrients. The cat problem was a real poser... I had a rue plant at the time, plus the two bushy lemon balms in a pair of 10" pots, and other smelly herbs besides... no good. Cat spray repellant, no good. Sonic repeller, no good. Water bombing when we saw her, no good. When she finally started leaving piles right on the deck for me to clean up, I was forced to bring all the plants in, because most of them are edible and I sure did not want to be eating *that* ! What finally solved it was a combination of neighbors moving (they had been feeding the feral kitty a few doors down) and me designing a cat-resistant barrier to put up at night. The deck only has one access point, even for an athletic cat, so it was much easier to protect than an open yard. Thankfully she never seems to stop by in the daytime, and with the neighborly food source gone, she has taken her feral kitty business elsewhere. Notice I said cat-resistant... don't believe that anything is truly cat *proof* =)...See MoreDoes lemon balm become invasive like mint?
Comments (5)I have a large patch of lemon balm (over 1000 square feet) planted in fall 2007, and I've seen no evidence of it spreading by root, here in Maryland. It certainly does self-seed all over the place, but in that regard it's just one among many weeds that pop up. Incidentally, the lemon balm was originally interplanted with catnip. It was thriving last year, but absolutely none of the catnip came back this year. I'm assuming it drowned because of the unusual snow cover last winter. The lemon balm is so vigorous that I was regretting planting it with the catnip. But if I had planted only catnip, I wouldn't have anything there now....See Moreoverwintering Lemon Verbena
Comments (11)Lemon Verbena will never look good in the winter because it is deciduous. When the days get short the leaves will drop and the plant will go dormant. In the spring you will see new buds as the days get longer. The only way you can keep the leaves looking fresh all winter is to use a grow light. I put my plants in a cool well lit area and let them go dormant and only water if the soil is very dry. Watering all winter will kill it because it's not growing. In the spring lift your plant and see if it's root bound and root prune and repot. Root pruning is extreamly important if you want lush new growth. I generaly take cuttings in May. I start them in peat pots because it's easier to see young roots....See Morestill no name for plant
