It is Labor Day Weekend, and I am still planting daylilies, or should I say: moving them. At this point, I am no longer trying to make major divisions, but I am still dividing the big ones (just not into as small a division as I would in the spring). I use plenty of compost around the roots to give them a head start. I will also cover them with straw for this first winter, to prevent heaving. I've done this in the past -- actually planted right up until the end of September -- and the plants did just fine. Hope this helps. MacThayer

Hmmm. Well, VanZyverdens (they supply retailers all over the country) here in Meridian had their final clearanace sale all through the month of November. I went the first day and promptly took home 2 or 3 hundred and planted them. THEN a friend of mind called me to accompany her to the final day of the sale (last week) to "help" her. Came home with MORE. Naturally, it has rained everyday since. No matter. I put the tulips in the refrigerator and the narcisus are out in the garage. We had a killing frost the day after Thanksgiving, so as soon as it dries out, I'll "roll up" the last of the lantanas, cupheas, and hyacinth beans. That will make room for the new additions. I'm going to be out putting up Christmas decorations anyway...:) By the way, get a load of this. At the sale, I bought 100 Spring Green tulips, and 15 dozen named jonquils for $26!!!! Of course, this is why my addiction is so out of control...

I'm looking for a quick trade of pepper, tomato, eggplant starts in a size suitable for shipping (4"-6" preferred). Only certain varieties will be good for me, though I can't name them all. I have enough Early Girl, Celebrity and Opalaka tomatoes so don't need those. I'm not looking for heirloom tomatoes. Here the names of a few I know I want. Tomatoes: Juliet, Big Beef, Beefmaster Peppers: Big Bertha, Golden Bell I would like to trade for at least 4 plants to make the shipping worthwhile. I have many different perennial plants in exchange for a good trade of vegetable plants. My exchange page is not at all updated but you can see on my Member Page that I have a lot of daylilies. Please don't waste your time making up a list of those you want until we agree to a trade. If daylilies are what you want, I can send you a list of 50 or more available ones from which to choose. Marie & c2g - Thanks for the advice. I will look up that book. I feel like I should clear up the fact that my land is not a wasteland with no good trees! LOL! We have maples in the front and back yard and scattered around our property. We have a beautiful hickory in the old pasture. On our property we also have lots of other hickories, maples, wild cherries (one that is at least 100 years old - not my estimate but someone more knowledgeable), oaks, aspen, black walnut and many, many more. About 1/3 of our 20 acres is wooded. The trees I got on clearance are ones I am willing to take the risk on. It may look like a bad risk to most of you but I am risking it with my eyes wide open and realistic expectations. If they don't work out I barely lose anything but time and I have that to spare. My lawn will still be beautiful without them and if they do survive - even if only a couple survive - it is worth my time. This is what I ended up buying: 2 Harvest Gold crabapples 1 Yoshino cherry 1 Kanzan cherry 1 Fairview Flame maple Total cost was a bit less then $60. I hope you will wish me good luck with them but I understand everyone who thinks I'm being foolhardy. Thanks again so much for all the useful advice. Karen
