Can I still plant daylily PLANTS?

I have found a nursery that is closing out and will sell daylily plants for 2.00 each. They are blooming now in August. Can I still plant them and they will be OK for next year?

Thanks for any advice or help.

It is my understanding, if the ground is not frozen, it is okay to plant daylilies. They should do fine.

Would that all plants were as forgiving as daylilies. You may plant them now even while in bloom. Help them by preparing the location before buying the plants so the roots will be out of the soil the minimum time. Keep them covered to prevent the roots from drying and they should transplant with little shock. Al

When i've done a new lasagne bed, i've heaped it higher than 8", maybe 10 or 12" (a good depth of soil on top). I think your daylilies should be okay if you planted now. When you move them, just take as much soil as you can around the roots and they shouldn't realize they've been moved (until they wake up and see a different view - hmmmmm!).

What can I still plant if I build in July?

I grew up in/around SF. Get a 5 gallon bucket, drill 4 holes on the bottom, put your summer tomatoes in there this year. You can toss out a few cuke vines, and some tomatoes, provided large transplants into the garden in July, but I'd prep for fall veggines instead. Do not pull them untill they stop fruiting completely, we'd get fruits in Oct some years. What you'll be looking at is starting a fall-crop of veggies for salads. Peas, carrots, spinach, basically your root & leaf veggies. Onions and garlic get off to a better start planted in fall too. If you want a strawberry patch, you'll wanna start in around Sept, so the roots can build up before it has summer heat. You'll be able to grow year-round, so figure out what you want to eat, and go from there.

As long as you can get a spade into the ground, you can plant tulips. Narcissi are a bit more picky,preferring a warm autumn as their roots start growing as soon as they are in the ground and they need a fairly lengthy period to grow enough root to guarantee a good bloom. There are various groups within the narcissus genus and it is my experience that the pickier triandrus, tazetta and jonquilla groups prefer a longer growing season but even so, the worst that might happen is coming up blind next spring or unseasonally late with weaker blooms...but this will correct itself the following year. Tulips have been successfully planted as late as January...at least in a more temperate zone 8 area but given their freezy provenance in chilly bulb fields, I wouldn't worry too much at all. My alkaline soil results from calcareous bedrock and is probably slightly higher than ph8 but seems to trouble narcissi and tulips not one bit. I would be more circumspect with things like trilliums but you should have no problem with your choices...and also, I have found amendments to affect ph have always been more successful at increasing alkalinity rather than the other way round. Go ahead and plant now - they will certainly be more successful than being kept in bags awaiting...what? You have nothing to lose.

with a zone appropriate plant.. cold is only an issue for your body .. not the plant .... they arent children ... i would also make sure .. in your soil ... with its drainage ... that pooling water is not an issue .... neither your hands nor tree roots.. want to stand/be in cold water for an extreme extended time ... im talking bad clay and days.. not minutes or an hour ... also ... in my MI.. and winter.. the winter winds are a big problem.. as in freeze drying.. as with my ground freeze ... i would have no way to water [hose nor frozen ground] .... and so a water stressed plant.. is on its own ... i use this as an example.. not that you have ground freeze issues ... and keep in mind.. a properly hydrated DORMANT plant.. simply doesnt need all that much water .... when its not summer ... its all a matter of knowing the variables ... and addressing them properly ... if nothing else... and you have draining soil.. you can just heel in the plants ..... pot and all .... and plant them in spring ... doing so ... tempers winter temp spikes on the pot itself .... the key is keeping the roots dormant ... thru all of winter.. none of this.. in and out of dormancy ... ken

In my region of the country, Central Illinois, I try to get all my perennials planted by sometime around mid July... I want them all to have a decent opportunity to grow a healthy root system before cold weather sets in, thus avoiding "frost heave".

There are several things, however, that can be planted later in the season... including Daylilies, Iris, and of course, fall planted bulbs.

Daylilies are very forgiving... and I'm still planting, having recently received several lovely varieties.

It is Labor Day Weekend, and I am still planting daylilies, or should I say: moving them. At this point, I am no longer trying to make major divisions, but I am still dividing the big ones (just not into as small a division as I would in the spring). I use plenty of compost around the roots to give them a head start. I will also cover them with straw for this first winter, to prevent heaving. I've done this in the past -- actually planted right up until the end of September -- and the plants did just fine. Hope this helps. MacThayer
