What about bears?
Comments (15)I knew bears were a possibility, but put off the inevitable. There was a "shocked" cartoon image in my head of what would happen when I put in an electric fence: ZZZZZZZttt! Didn't get shocked. Pretty easy to do. The hives are no longer in the backyard, found a better place just down the hill at a neighbor's, more morning sun. I had a hive there last year that didn't get bothered by the marauding bear, but of course it is still a possibility. I don't bait the fence, mainly because I don't want to attract a bear that wouldn't find the location otherwise. Before I moved the hives to their location, I'm fairly sure the bear came back and the electric fence got him. One morning, some of the fence poles were tilted inwards....See MoreThe 12 good things about book clubs
Comments (47)Rosefolly ......well the craziness would sure fit for my group though we hardly tipple. Our senses of humor seem to sync so that when we get on a roll we really have some great laughs. During one nasty snowstorm one of the girls was getting ready to drive up for our get together and her husband asked : " What do you all DO at these that you'd risk life and limb to get there !!?" LOL. They each hate to miss our "every other week" afternoons during the winter season. And our motto is : " If you're not here we'll talk about you ! " ( all in good fun :0))...See MoreHow do you cope with the things you don't like about where you live?
Comments (46)Nope, we were in a coastal town and within a 5 minute drive to the beach. Lots of ocean breeze, but still its hot all year round. Yes, Michigan has humidity and heat too, and yes it can be miserable to be in but it’s not in the 90’s or 100’s year round and we do reap benefits from that humidity like lots of rain (as opposed to droughts). Lawns are lush and healthy, plants and trees alike thrive here. It also never gets so hot that you can fry an egg on the hood of your car. Then there are the thunderstorms. When the humidity peaks, they come in for a quick shower to cool things down. Open the windows and that breeze with it’s smell of the rain is heaven. Say what you will Elmer, but as far as I’m concerned there is really no comparison. I’ll take Michigan’s summer of months of humidity along with it’s snow and ice in the winter over that dry relentless heat any day. I don’t miss it at all. LOL Forgot to add, I’m in one of those suburbs too, about 45 miles north of Detroit. When it comes to snow, it’s the perfect spot because we’re too low for the northern squalls and far enough north to miss the Ohio Valley Blizzards. We usually don’t get more than 6 inches at a time during the season. We live on a hill and the AWD on our SUV’s has no problem driving threw it, but the views are beautiful....See MoreOT........Yoyobon's book find !
Comments (10)Very strange. Now if this had been a Loony Tune cartoon the scenario would have been like this: Yoyobon is walking through the forest minding her own business when she suddenly sees a book on the ground in front of her feet. She bends to pick it up not noticing that it has a length of rope attached to it. The book slowly moves away from her hand, she follows until she comes face to face with a very hairy bear who's wide open mouth displays nasty sharp teeth. But nothing daunted, our heroine, who speaks fluent 'bear' says " Is this a photo of you on the cover? My word you are really so much more good looking than your picture. May I take a look inside the book to read your words of wisdom?" The bear lulled into a sense of false security passes the book to Yoyobon who speedily finds the chapter 'Bears: How to Fight and Win'. A quick glance tells her all she needs to know. With her free hand she quickly detaches the rope from the book and still one-handed makes a slipknot ( she didn't get a bear-catching badge in Girl Scouts for nothing) loops it over the bear's head and the other end round an overhanging branch and . .. PULLS. At the sound of the bear's heavy gasps the local ranger appears. "My goodness Miss, we have been chasing that old grizzly for years. How did you manage to stay so calm when facing imminent evisceration and almost certain death?" Instead of answering him Yoyobon, pulling herself up to her full 5 foot something, looks the ranger in the eye and tells him "You addressed me using what might be considered an inappropriate pronoun. I might prefer to be known as he she they it . . ." With a faint cry of terror the ranger climbs the rope and clings to the body of the still-alive bear. "I know when I'm beat. I feel much safer up here." "That's All Folks"...See More- 3 years ago
