Design Advice for Purple & Grey Marble Fireplace

I have a beautiful 1900s Victorian House. The fireplace pictured is not original but historic to some degree. What I love about it is the veiny gray and purple marble around the hearth. I don’t know how to style around it though. I’ve thought gray-green (being opposite colors on the the color wheel) but I do not want it to read farmhouse. Wallpaper is another option to consider, but I’m unsure of the appropriate dominant color palette. Also considered a complimentary blue, but worried about it reading too cool with the old wood trim? Maybe that’s ok though haha I’m at a loss
( Don’t worry about incorporating the furniture)

IMO a close up of the tile would be ahuge help. Not sure what you mean about the furniture so explain that. We nned a bit more info please I think if you love the purple and gray why not use a purple/ gray for the walls maybe just a hint of color

I mistakenly posted this to the wrong person... can you believe that! I went through the entire answer, submitted, and then the OP wrote back that I must have been confused. So, I went back, copied, and am pasting it in to whom I meant it to be for! I feel so STUPID! boxer kills me with all those fabulous pics. I try and post/research but get so sidetracked staring at and following all the pics/links. I'm just not feeling the dark granite for your space. From your pics it seems almost like a Mid Century kind of home... BEAUTIFUL! I think your stonework on your fireplace is just gorgeous. I would not paint it. However, with all the angular lines of the walls/ceilings/stonework; I'm somewhat bothered by the wood walls. I love wood, covet your wood floors; but I do think your home would be so much more "refreshed" without the wood walls. I also think it would make the fireplace really POP. I'd either take the wood off and skim coat/paint, or I know I've seen episodes on some home remodeling show where they used some product to fill in the cracks and then skim coated/painted, OR... last resort... pull the wood off and re-sheetrock and paint. I'd love a soft gray color against that stone.... a warm light gray. ANyway... to countertops. Are you kitchen floors the same wood? Sorry if I missed that somewhere. I think I'd choose a light almost white gr anite for the kitchen. Your cabs are going to be a beautiful rich color. If the floors are also wood, I'd love the soft look of a whiteish granite. HOw about something like Andromeda White? Alku05 has it in her gorgeous kitchen. I hope it's OK I'm embedding her pic: A closeup from Granitestock's site: Another one could be Kashmir White. @kpyeatt - I decided to go to Floor & Decor based upon your photos above. I wanted to purchase some tile for one of my fireplaces. FYI - I had never been inside the store before - kinda overwhelming with all the beautiful tile choices on display! The Sahara Carrara tile looks NOTHING like what you have installed in your bathroom! Hardly any variation - and it looks very different from my bianco Carrara tiles. The bianco Carrara is actually from Italy - so, I expected to see a difference - but I didn’t expect the composition actual stone to look as DRAMATICALLY different as it does. The Sahara Carrara had more of a translucent look to it + it kinda looked a bit “sparkly” (not sure how to accurately describe it!) You either got “lucky“ with the batch of tiles you received - OR - I am just “unlucky” based upon the ones available at the store! Maybe the quality has declined over the past three years since others in this thread (including the OP) decided to buy it - who knows??!!? It would be interesting to see photos posted by others who have installed it. Just thought I’d post this in case anyone decides to order some online, and have them shipped without actually seeing the product first. I highly suggest that you order several samples in order to get an accurate feel for how it will look. It’s unfortunate because the price was good - and, based upon your photos, I had high expectations. 😞

Do not sign anything releasing them from liability. And if they are in charge of saying whether or not they are at fault, of course they have a strong incentive to convince you that they are not to blame. If you can, find a pro who knows the TCNA handbook and have them there with you during demo. Pay the pro for the day and have them document the problems and cross-reference them to the industry guideline that has been violated, and write up a report for you on their business letterhead. Also, take lots of pictures during the demo, at lunch when they leave, as they are working, and at the end of the day when they leave. Don't interfere or get in their way, but get in there and take pictures. I am telling you this because we just won back twice the amount we paid a contractor who trashed our bathroom and quit the job. One of the huge things that help us was having the independent tile pro documenting things during the re-demo, and cross refefencing the voilations to the TCNA, other industry guidelines, and manufacturer's instructions. We just won a district court case, pro se, last month, and we had no experience with anything like this before. Document, document, document. Hopefully Home Depot will see the writing on the wall and re-do or refund. They will see that you are documenting like crazy and will know that they need to make good now. Probably a Home Depot rep should be there too, not just the tile hack they hired. Have a friend, spouse, or neighbor there for moral support and to ensure the tile hack doesn't harass you. If they start yelling at you or anything like that, have your advocate film them on their cell phone.

Wow - I guess I shouldn't have turned off notifications on this thread :) To the OP (and for the benefit of any lurkers) you say you want a pale blue-gray, although it seems like you really want white or off-white (and definitely don't want something with purple undertones). But, you haven't provided any additional information about your space that would lend to helpful suggestions on an online forum. The right color for your space will be the color that best relates to the hard finishes and furnishings/décor. And, while super light "neutrals" and whites are very popular right now, keep in mind that most of the inspiration images that use white are rooms that are flooded with natural light, have strong architectural elements, and are fully decorated by professionals. The average house does not have all of these elements and would struggle to pull off white walls without looking like the homeowner just hasn't picked a color or painted the walls yet. (Not judging/guessing whether the light color will work for you as I don't know anything about your space, but putting this out there for the benefit of any lurkers). I love violet grays and use a lot of violet grays, taupe and teal greens in my décor.

I like basing colors on nature:

The challenge I see with your color palette is joining the violet grays with the cream walls that are in the adjoining rooms.

You will need to incorporate some creams, so many of the taupe colors (beige/gray with violet undertones won't work well with the creamier (more yellow) beige/off white on your other walls.

I have a few items in my home that have some purples and greener grayish greens with cream or off whites, but those are more difficult to find.

I saw this wall paper and thought it could be a palette that would pull these together.

Violet and beige doesn't happen a lot in nature, but it is unique and beautiful when you find it . . .

Remove the current tile. Don't go with cool colors against all that warm wood. Get some beautiful handmade ceramic tile in earth tones and a matte finish. A few examples for inspiration:

I see no reason to keep the marble, nor work around it with that much wood. Sorry, it's to paint yourself into a corner.

The chimney breast is not original, either.

Get your design ideas together regarding the rest of the room, first. Then? Change it.

Purple like your marble around the fireplace, plus orange like all that wood, call for green. I'd say a deep bright but dark green, like an emerald. That makes a triadic color scheme and is one of my favorites. You'll want to lighten it up with some cream.

Here are a variety of rugs that will work in your room. Some even work with the color of your section, though the furnishings layout for this room are not really complementary to the architecture.

If there is enough room, you can have two comfortable chairs (like wingbacks) at the fireplace and use a complementary color fabric. Then the rest of the room can be the “main” seating area and design in a way that works but isn’t dominated by the purple.

You can also design the room to your liking and ignore the purple.

I like your rug but it’s small for the room. Beverly showed you a variety of ideas that make the room look great. Note the size of the rugs she used.

This is the perfect opportunity to bring cool grays into the color scheme. You are already on the right track with your furniture. I absolutely would incorporate it. It makes the room. A combo of warm and cool tones is so current.

Let the marble be the focal for the room and with its busy pattern, let it shine, I'd stick with solid fabrics and rug. The patterned rug and pillows, although the same color range, are distracting.

Love the bare white walls and wood trim, they are also current. Stick with the contemporary theme and go clean and spare two-tone for the room. In the first photo the eye already locks on that beautiful marble. I know minimal is the opposite of Victorian but with that perfect furniture and that paint job.....wow....just sayin'!

If you want to furnish your home in keeping with Victorian style, there are plenty of pictures on HOUZZ and Google that can guide you that show you don't have to be a purist. If you provide the dimensions of your room and furnishings plus a few more photos, you can get good advice here.

I liked some of the rugs suggested by BeverlyFLADeziner and picked the one belowbecause of the grey sofa. Just tweeked it by showing creamier white walls and adding white accent pillows. I'm suggesting a few white paint colours but paint always needs to be tested prior to painting a room. Can't really comment on an alternate furniture layout without a floor plan.
