Flooring Design Dilemma Kitchens

Need help with flooring options for new kitchen island

When we purchased our house, we added laminate flooring (snap-on type) to tile floors. We want to replace our island as it is quite small. Is it possible to connect the bottom of the island to the flooring or does it need to be removed to drill it directly into the concrete slab? Also, if it is possible, then when the island is removed, the flooring underneath will obviously be lower than the file/laminate. Can this be filled in with concrete leveling? There is no sense in adding flooring as it will be covered by the island. But again my main question is can the island be attached directly to the laminate flooring? A picture of the current flooring and island is attached. Thanks!

Floating floors like laminate should not be placed under permanently installed built ins like cabinets. Those built ins must be permanently affixed to the subfloor, and have electrical run to them, for the multiple electrical outlets that are required by code. Additionally, the tile should have been removed, and the subfloor smoothness addressed, before the laminate was installed.

Thanks so much everyone; I appreciate your time and feedback. If I did a darker island base, it would be a similar finish to the wood floors. One one hand, I thought that it might provide better transition to the adjacent family/hearth room, but I do worry about either a dark island or dark island countertop looking like a "black hole" in the middle of the room, if that makes sense. Lightness is a good thing, as both front and back porches will result is not a lot of direct sunlight. Plus, like I said, I'm going with a quartz and while I like the furniture look of a wood topped island, I don't know if the espresso brown quartz countertop would give me the same effect. Again, thanks so much! I look forward to sharing progress in the coming months.

First, the "tar" -- adhesive-- very likely does not contain asbestos although according to some sources it might. You can have it tested to be sure, if you haven't already. If you are sure it doesn't have asbestos, it does sand off fairly easily. Secondly, I found out (quite by accident) that DIF wallpaper remover loosens this adhesive to the point that it can be scraped off pretty easily with a wide putty knife. (oddly enough, adhesive remover didn't loosen it at all!) Once the paste was removed, the wood sanded nicely. This is what I did, and it really didn't take long. I did find that most of the flooring contractors that I called out took one look and told me it couldn't be done, or only at a huge price, or wouldn't be worth the effort. However, I kept calling around, and did find a couple of companies that had dealt with this before and weren't frightened by the job. But, in the end I saved money by doing the scraping first (which allowed me to be sure there were no more nails or staples in the floor) then renting the sander. So, if you would really like to salvage that floor, try the DIF and call around to find another flooring contractor.

Also, this is an *example* photo of a similar kitchen layout and colors. Our back splash will be a much lighter gray, and our fixtures will be ORB, but it's otherwise fairly similar. I think this is why I'm drawn to the glass lights!

What are the floors that you might carry in - wood? Colors that work well with warm toned wood are white, cream, creamy beige, blues and greens. I have a warm wood kitchen with white trim. I have a creamy beige wall color with just enough color to set off the white trim. My wall color is Valspar Savory Beige - I am sure there are similar colors made by other paint companies. I have a simple cream subway tile backsplash which I really like - the simple look is often best with stained cabinets. (Pics of my kitchen in my my pics idea book.)

Because you didn't show a picture of the whole kitchen I don't know if you actually have room for a larger island. If you had one, would you still have a minimum of 42" between it and perimeter cabinets? 48" is even better, especially on a side with an appliance.

Also, did putting a layer of flooring on top of existing cause you to trap your dishwasher? The previous owners of our house did that and now we can't get the dishwasher out to repair or replace it without having the countertop removed. Just want to make you aware of this possibility so you don't get an unpleasant surprise later.

The island hasn't been modified, it is the original from when the house was built, so presumably, it was permanently affixed to the subfloor. If we can install a new island, we just want it longer with the same width and height as the current one. So the end that is shown in the picture would be exactly the same, but the other end will be over the laminate floor. I thought we could remove the laminate and remove the tile underneath so the entire island will be affixed to the subfloor, however, a friend of ours said it wasn't possible with the snap-on flooring because the entire kitchen/dining area will need to be replaced. Hence the question of whether it can be affixed directly through the flooring, but it sounds like it is not possible.

We have plenty of room because our main kitchen area is "U-shaped" and the island will extend into an open space/dining area.

@kandrewspa it doesn't look like we have that issue with the dishwasher, luckily.

You can always remove a section of the floating floor. You should not have to replace it.
