Another option would be to use a wireless fan/light control switch that would control the fan and light separately. This allows you to switch both the fan speeds and dim lights. IÂve installed close to 50 of these in where instead of running 3 wire w/ground to the Fan location from the switch to replace the 2 wire w/ground. At the switch location you just connect the black (Hot) to the black going up to the fan (this makes it hot all the time at the fan location for the receiver). White to whites and ground with grounds. At the fan just follow directions from the package. Wireless receiver black to black for power to the receiver, white to white, blue to fan blue and black to fan black. The only drawback IÂve had with these is the size of the receiver. Sometimes itÂs tough to fit it on certain fans as it doesnÂt really fit in the boxes. It basically needs to fit in the canopy of the fan. As others have said what you had was UNSAFE and could potentially hurt someone or worse. Full Disclosure: I'm not a fan of home cheapo but I do like this switch. Oh man people that do things like this are why others get killed doing simple electrical work. Some home owner simply turns off a breaker and begins to pull out an outlet to replace it, as they grab in at the neutral wire (with the fan attempting to make a circuit through it) and their other hand is touching ground ZAP! Fan makes a circuit with the heart in series, Cardiac Arrest, he/she is dead. Stuff like this aggraviates me so much because that scenario CAN happen and you really need to fix this bad mistake and not just let it go. So many diy's are happy with "it works!" A neutral can not just be stolen from any box. All conductors of the circuit must be ran together. Simply feed the switch with the outlet, run a single wire to the fan from the switch, that is less work and stealing neutrals from a random junction box and it won't kill any body or cause bad current paths through the wiring.

I did the same thing on my outdoor patio. I replaced two light fixtures with ceiling fans/lights combos. I had plenty of room to run a switch, but decided to go the wireless remote route. I bought two of the remotes, set the DIP switches to the same frequency, and just used one wireless switch in the switch panel just inside the patio door (replacing the original switch that controlled the lights). It controls both lights/fans perfectly. As an added bonus, I could take the other wireless switch and toss it on the patio table to control them when we're out on the patio if we want. Pretty cool stuff!

I downloaded the read the installation manual. I don't think you can wire it to controlled from a wall-switch. The fan/lighting functions all seem to be integrated into the microprocessor inside the light. It needs to control the light to implement the light-delay feature for example.
